Is it true one needs to budget 10% of 996's original cost....

Is it true one needs to budget 10% of 996's original cost....

each year to maintain or repair it, should any trouble arise?

Someone said, since a 996 Turbo originally cost 90+ grand, costs to maintain and fix it is very expensive regardless of how much you can get one nowadays.

This makes sense but I hope it's not true. 10K a year is a lot for any car IMO, and I still have my goal of getting a 996TT in 2 years or 3.

most of these entry level was $ 125K+ and the cost of entry is embarrassingly low now, letting a lot of folks into them, that previously could not. i had to wait too lol. i'd be very surprised if you didn't find that one thing many new(er) owners of these didn't properly anticipate is the cost of maintaining ownership. although these cars are as reliable ( to say nothing of fulfilling ) as any car can or should be. they are not cheap to run. keeping a revolving slush fund of $5k a year on upkeep alone, seems prudent. +/- depending upon whether you do much or all of your own work. that can easily hit 10k per annum if you run into problems or walls.

then there are mods....

coolant fitting repair 3000$, slave cylinder accumlater 1000$, spoiler hyd repair 1500$, 2nd gear popout 5000$ for rebuild. if these havent been done its very likely you will foot the bill for it. once done the coolant and trans should be fine. slave and spoiler will be recurring expenses unless you change to gt2 slave and fixed wing setup.

after that you should be ok with 3000$ for reg maintenence during the yr but any unseen problem can get expensive fast. new axle 800$ , headlight assy 1500$. i just spent 1125$ for pads rotors lines and fluid. i do all my own work. expect as least the cost of parts in labor, just as an example. ability to drive a turbo porsche, worth every penny!

Depends on how many miles you drive. Last year I did an oil change and FMS($30.) The prior year I did tires and slave/accumulator $500). 2500 miles over the last two years.

Learn how to work on the car. Unless you're not mechanically inclined then spare the car that pain.

Here is a good place to give you an idea of the price of parts. Make sure you look at the Turbo specific parts as those can be 2x the cost of the Carrera parts.

I don't know where you can get an oil change for $30. I just did one myself with Mobil 1 oil and filter from Canadian Tire - it cost $157.

That said, I have had my car for 3 years and I've spent about $2,500 on maintenance including coolant tank, tires, battery, alternator and oil changes. On the other hand, I've spent a little over $15,000 in mods that were completely unnecessary. (Fun though!)

Costs to maintain a 996 TT in Chicago for me have been:

$200 annual (or every 10k mile) oil change
$200 bi-annual brake fluid flush and fill (ATE Super Blue), Castrol SRF will run you more
$50 and up - Plugs every 30k miles. Dealers will corn-hole you on this so try to read a DIY. It's really easy if you take your time.

Pop-out is really not as common as people think. I wouldn't do the coolant line job for a street driven daily driver, but I would do it if you track the car. If you experience spoiler failure, the spoiler can also be deactivated in either the up or down position (if it goes out and you don't have a warranty).

I plan to only drive the car 4 or 5 times a week during May to November. Outside these months, I get snow here in my city and don't plan on driving (not only because it's a nice car, but since lots of accidents happen when winter and snow is around).

I see many different figures and different amounts amongst you 996TT owners. I can only afford either a 2000-2004 996TT-- is one cheaper to run and fix out of this group?

Stupid question, but is "slush fund" basically a way of saying backup/emergency money to spend solely on your 996?

Lastly, in comparison with my OTHER dream car, the Lamborghini Gallardo (2004)... which is costlier to run and/or maintain? Gallardo or a Porsche Turbo (00-04)?

I've had my car,2004 996tt cabriolet for eight months.

So far I've spent (doing it from memory here so may be off a bit on some individual costs)

Replacement key $250 +- including programming
Oil change $225
Brake flush $189
Plugs and coils about $600 in labour (I bought parts myself, plugs and coils about $280)

I need to replace tires in a few hundred miles which is about $1000 for four including installation and alignment. I'm planning on Sumitos.

Mods so far speedtech 2.5 cross flow exhaust.

My two Porsches so far have been quite dependable, but when things break figure 2-3x the cost of your typical Toyota/Honda.

Last cabriolet had top issues. Two small motors cost me $1000

I'm having a minor issue on this one. Most likely $400 or so to fix one cable.

not stupid at all. re "slush fund". i was alive in the nixon era. my bad. all money is clean.

re costlier to maintain? think of the porsche relative to its common or shared ancestry ( ok, geography ) with vw.. think of the gallardo as a mechanical bull with expensive feed.

My 996TT is relatively cheap to maintain and it is my daily driver year around. I've replaced the alternator and had a brake job plus regular oil changes. Owned it four years and put on close to 40K miles (car is at almost 90K now).

10%, no way. $1-2K sure.

Cheaper than my E55.

Lightbulb I figure 20k per year on avg

I figure the most common costs will be tires and regular upkeep.

However with the pccb brakes I figure every few years it's going to be expensive.

A local dude with a 360 told me his CC rotors don't wear like steel and won't need to be changed every time or possibly even ever. Are the PCCB rotors the same? If so, it could actually be cheaper to run the PCCB's than the steel rotors.
