Factory belts + racing harnesses
Factory belts + racing harnesses
Maybe this belongs in the track section, but I know we have lots of experts here so here is my ramble. I apologize in advance if I'm unclear.
Going to "step up" my DE experience, so I'm addding a simple bolt in rollbar (agency power) and changing out seats from factory to Status Ring GT. Oh, also adding typical racing belts, too, which is the only reason for the rollbar essentially. OK, maybe for a bit of the racer wanna-be look too. Guilty!
So...Can factory seat belts co-exist easily with racing belts? This is still my 6 month DD. It would seem so simple, but I'm told that the mounting of the tunnel side factory belt latch becomes a problem with height (not high enough) but more importantly, the racing lap belts don't really have a place to mount without drilling a new mounting location. I'm not terribly averse to drilling into my beautiful Porsche, but it would seem that the lap belts would somehow bolt into the Status seat mounts or below the slider rails, or something. Am I misunderstanding this, being told its complicated when it isn't, or what?
Looking for help on this topic. Hope I made sense.
Thanks.

You can definitely use the factory belts with the aftermarket harnessed. We set up cars this way all the time.
The big thing is to make sure that if you are going to mount the belts to anywhere other than a factory mounting point - MAKE SURE IT IS REINFORCED!
We have seen plenty of "DIY Racers" who just drill a hole and bolt in an eyebolt - sure it holds - until you crash and it just rips right through the sheetmetal.
I would definitely recommend you have a shop install the belts for you, otherwise make sure to read the belt manual (or PM us if you don't have one) so you understand how to mount them properly.
For now, you should be able to install the seats and the bar and use your factory belts without issue.

marc get speedware to get busy on the tank plates!! theres 2 sales already!
marc the oem belts can be kept in place. in lieu of the tank plates you need reinforced mounts in the floor. eyelets can used with plating underneath.

ive been harrasing them to build these for our cars, marc. i dont want to drill and weld unless i have to. this is a perfect alternative. completely reversible just the roll bar!

I have GT3 Euro seats and both the factory seatbelts and harnesses mount to the seat itself with no need to drill or modify anything. Also remember that you will need a HANS if you plan to run harnesses. I'm a believer that running a harness without a HANS is more dangerous than just using the factory belts which are designed with more stretch and give than a harness.

This is the OEM mounting method used by Porsche on the 996GT3. In other words it has been crash tested and deemed safe by TUV and the European safety authorities. These seats and harnesses were never offered as an option on US spec cars but the fact that they were approved for use in these cars everywhere else in the world the GT3 was sold is good enough for me. I assume the factory seat mounts were crash tested and found strong enough. I definitely wouldn't trust any of the immitation GT3 seats with their Chinese made sliders/mounts.

i suppose. it just seem proper to mount all your safety equipment to a single area. not say if the floor, roll bar mounts were used and the seat broke you wouldnt sustain some injury you would at least be kept in place. the other way you would be a ping pong ball in the cabin
People are free to mount seats or belts any way they wish but when you are involved in a crash where people get hurt and the lawyers come calling to find out who made you the engineer....well good luck with that one. I'd rather drive a car that has the safety equipment engineered and installed as intended by the car manufacturer, in this case Porsche. After all, these are still street cars driven on the street. I assure you that once you take a factory seatbelt and remount it you have made your car no longer street legal and opened yourself up to a lot of potential liability. For race cars, all bets are off as they are not used on public roads. Just my $0.02. I still drive my car occasionally on the street and as a result decided on the factory GT3 seats and the factory Porsche roll bar along with the Porsche GT3 harnesses designed for those seats. For a track only car I would obviously use something completely different.

Just because some things seem proper may not always make them so.
