What is the difference between PIWIS and PST2 ? Is PIWIS only for models after 996? Can PIWIS read things on a 996TT that the PST2 can't?

Word I have is PIWIS (Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System) diagnostics computer was the upgraded system from PST2 (Porsche System Tester 2).

PIWIS was supposed to be backward compatible with earlier models of cars at least those OBD2 compatible/compliant.

It also had some features which limited its life. Those PIWIS systems that were kept updated went "dark" a few years ago.

PIWIS2 is the replacement. There was a problem with the early version in it was not compatible with older cars, pre-2004 IIRC.

At some point an upgrade was made, but in the meantime some dealers struggled with this. Old PIWIS that had not been upgraded were searched out and put into service. And some dealers even hung on to their PST2 computers.

PIWIS2 requires monthly updates to keep alive. The charge is last I heard $600/month per station. It is rumored to cost a small fortune to buy too and is reportedly not available to consumers, only to licensed dealers and auto repair shops.

Oh, AFAIK all features PIWIS has access to PST2 had access too as well. The newer diagnostics computers are for accessing new features of the newer models, newer features that didn't exist in the older models, while maintaining backward compatibility with the older models.

For more info on how PIWIS2 differs from PIWIS here's a link:
