Safety First

Sorry to hear about track fatalities this year. God bless the families, and children left behind.
As an amatuer racer for over 15 years, with a couple of SCCA championships (regionals at Lime Rock) under my belt, I have seen a lot of "stuff" happen.
Racing is a selfish sport, ( let me finish ) as we expose ourselves to loss of life and limb ( at all levels of motorsports ) to pursue our hobbies/vocations for little more than momentary gratification, and for the fortunate few a paycheck.
All the time I am asked how can I go faster, never am I asked how much safer I can be?.
There is a moral to this story, Safety First.
If your sanctionong body requires a 2.5 lb extinguisher, go for 5 lbs., with 2 remote triggers.
If two layer suits are o.k., go for 3 or 4 layers, on top of your nomex undies. Go for the head and neck restraint, or at least go for a donut ( collar ), but preferrably HANS devices. Six point harnesses, on and on...
The saying goes, "You can never have enough HP", I have one of my own"You can never be too safe".
If you dont think safety is this important, picture someone else raising your children.
God bless the fallen and their families, my heart goes to you that are left behind.
On a less somber note, suit up, kneel for St. Christopher, and drive it like you stole it. And may we all take many more checkers.

Jayster, I agree with everything you said except to imply that a neck collar has anything to do with safety. It is almost worthless from a safety standpoint in the event of an accident. Get a HANS type sytem!

Hey C.C., thanks for the response,
I have personally experienced the benefit of a collar in an impact,
more than once,( my wifes have told me), before Earnhardt, and the availability of H.A.N.S. Devices.
A safety device it is ( donut )and it works, far better than nothing at all.
However what I said was, "at least a donut....." ," but, preferrably a Hans type device."
Anyway, guys the point is, Safety upgrades are cheap and pay enormous dividends, even if you never "need" them. Driver confidence goes way up when you know your as safe as can be.
Peace, and have fun.
