Modding a Tip

Experts,

I got rid of my X50 a while back and I miss it badly. I have a line on an 01 TT but it is a Tiptronic (already has 19's on it).

I am assuming it is still possible to mod a Tip - true?

Has anyone here done that and been happy with the results?

Thanks in advance - I'll do more searching and reviewing tonight, but I have a short window to make this deal.

--Foster

PS. Any reliable tuners in Houston, or would I be forced to send it out of state?

You should ask sharkster, he has a ghetto-made-bling-bling Turbo Tip. You will, however, need a tranny cooler for bigger power outputs.

I have an '02 TT 50 Tip that has been modified as below. I drive the car in the manual mode at all times and I decide when the car shifts and it is almost the same as a manual transmission.

If you're in SoCal, you're welcome to drive the car.

We have performed a few 640 HP Stage 4 GT upgrades to tiptronic cars with good success. The trans cooler is something that we are working on for these higher HP cars to keep them reliable. So far they have proven to be very strong.

Todd, am I correct in assuming that the 02 NA C4 Cab Tip is the same trans that is on the TT Tip? I heard that the NA C4s used the TT Tip while the C2s used a different Tip. Can you confirm?

Don,

The C2 and C4 tip would have to use a different tranny due to the front output shaft.

The 996TT uses a Mercedes Benz tiptronic transmission. The NA c4 uses something different. I have not spent a ton of time on the C4 tips so I am not sure as to which make it is, maybe Getrag?

Todd, would transmission numbers give a clue? Only reason I'm interested is attempting to determine whether or not I should SC my 02 C4 w/a TipS.

Sorry I'm late in the game on this... To follow-on what Todd said, of course a tip can be modded. It's really not that bad of a platform for getting some nice gains. First up it uses the same ZF tranny as the Merc S600, which puts down about 680 foot pounds of Torque stock. I have a friend that's taken it up to 780 in his S600. Todd's advice on tranny cooling is a good idea. A couple of times I know mine has gotten too hot and as a result the DME cuts power to keep things safe... All the mods I've done to mine have turned out really well in my opinion.

Stuff you could do are go with a Stage IV GT, which is a proven pack, with updraged turbos, headers, exhaust, DVs etc... If that's not enough power for ya' then... If it's too much there are loads of other options. Talk to Stephen at imagineauto.com or Todd at EVO as they can talk you through your needs.

Once you go big with HP dont' forget to change the surrounding environment with it, especially the suspension. The stock suspension is a bit poopie.

Thanks everyone, this advice was timely. I pulled the trigger and bought an 01 Tip for a third car. I'll post pics later.

A large reason I wanted to get back into a Porsche (besides the obvious driving reasons) is this community. It creates its own kind of excitement, huh?

I'll be doing that research on the mods - hopefully some fun stories will result.

Thanks all.
