Sanity Check - Looking at buying a 996 turbo
Echoing previous posters, I just recently picked up my car after a year+ of doing research, watching prices, etc. I have always wanted a 996 TT from the first time I saw one and I'm at a point in my life where I could afford to get one of the few cars I'd ever REALLY wanted. My previous want was an Evo and I sold my Evo X to get the TT. I was a little sad at first, but the Porsche is such a different car and so much more engaging to drive I quickly got over it. I like the look of the S5s a lot as well but if you've always wanted a 996TT, your wife is behind it, and you can afford it, just do it! If you're anything like me you'll have to go into your garage and walk around the whole car at least once a day =]
Man, I've got black Ext. and Tan Interior. I would sell you mine, but I look it too much right now. Although I have been thinking about the 997T lately.
Not trying to thread jack but if you have any interest in a 2001 996T with Tan interior and 74,389k on the clock let me know.
Car currently has Billet K16 Turbos. Injectors, inlet pipes, and tune from 911Tuning (Markski). I havn't had it on a dyno, but it probably puts down about 570awhp. Probably looking for about $46K to sell! Let me know if you're at all interested.

OP, welcome to the madness!
I've had Porsches for the last dozen years or so. Bought an 02 Turbo in April of this year. I didn't really have a price limit -- I really demanded a specific car: silver/black with X50 and under 20,000 miles. I found one with 17,000, not 15 miles from my house. Unfortunately, it had some poorly done suspension mods and $1500/set 19" wheels, but the engine was unmolested (but for a terribly droney B+B exhaust.)
In addition to the X50 option, it is drowning in leather upgrades (149k MSRP), which is nice but far from necessary. I bought it for $55k (ask was 57), then spent about 7k getting it returned to good suspension, good exhaust and the wheels I wanted. (Only paid $1k for refinished 18" SportTechno OEM optional wheels, so that's why the cost for all those things was so low.)
Couldn't be happier. In fact, I had a low-miles Boxster S I was planning to keep when I bought the Turbo (they really are quite different cars), but I've since recently sold the Boxster to a friend because I hadn't done anything but fire it up occasionally since buying the 996TT. Enjoy the hunt and don't settle. With over 20,000 of these in the world, finding the one you want shouldn't be too hard.

Well guys - I pulled the trigger. I'm the type of guy that once I set my mind to something, pulling me off the path is pretty hard. This thread helped me make up my mind.
Soon after I started this thread, I zeroed in on a couple cars - both Lapis Blue with tan interior. Ultimately I chose one at a independent dealer in Pittsburgh - amazing condition and extensive service records. 18,869 miles when I picked her up. 2001 996TT - I flew out last Thursday to get her.
Some will think I'm crazy for adding 1000 miles to a low mileage vehicle driving back to the midwest from PA - but I HAD to do it. I've driven nearly all my cars back from somewhere, so I felt like I wanted to experience the same thing with my first 911. I'm so glad I did.
I have to say I'm far more impressed with the car than even my high expectations suggested I would be. I am giddy each time I drive it. Highway driving is a joy - it just does whatever you need it to do. I've been finding excuses each day to take her out - I work from home so knowing she's just sitting there drives me crazy.
I now have 19992 miles - 8 days into ownership. I would imagine she'll see 5-7k miles a year, with the way I drive. Looking forward to every single one of those miles.
I've attached a couple quick shots of the exterior and interior. I'll try and get better shots once I have a chance to do the full body treatment.
Oh - and I became a PCA member. Is there something I can get from the PCA based on VIN - like a full build list? It's something I've done with other cars and would be really interested in doing the same here.
Thanks again to everyone who contributed to this thread. Another happy owner!

Really clean looking car on the inside, they really are stout cars, they do have some quirky issues and typical luxury car costs but they are built to last!
Enjoy it!
I came from an 09 E92 M3 6-speed with coil overs, etc. No comparison. I love my 02 TT.
This is a forever car. I have no problem dumping insane amounts of upgrade money into it because I will have it for a really long time.
Buy what you want, and know what your getting into. Good luck!
