Second Gear Pop Out issue with 2004's??

Car has 54k on it and has had no gearbox issues knock on wood.

Does the 2004's have less issues compared to the 01-02's?

Just wondering

My understanding that the problem is less prevalent with the 04 as suppose to the 01.

So is it basically some gearboxes that just are lucky enough to just not have the issue?

HI,,I have a 2004 with around 45,000 miles and its my daily driver.
I don't baby it and I do a lot of full throttle power shifts 1st to 2nd with NO 2nd gear problem,,yet..LOL..
I was told the same from a Porsche tech that 2004 and 2005 was not as prone to that?

Are there any opinions on the G Box detent used to supposedly prevent this issue. I was wanting to install one to prevent this pop out from ever happening and just want to know if anyone has had this issue arise after the install?

I've heard that some X-50 cars(maybe k16'ers too?) came with steel sychro's, perhaps the reason why some cars(brass) are more prone to the issue than others(steel)?

See those of the types of things that happen when you're at the end of a model. The 997 non turbo was already being produced from my understanding when 2004 996TT was being produced. So usually a manufacturer will stop producing older parts if they have updated ones for the new model and use them, specifically problem areas (within reason). So the difference between steel and brass would not be presented on a bulletin, I would venture to guess.

I know with the N54 (bmw) engine the early models had some forged internals like rods, but they changed that witht he later models and never mentioned any of that to the public. Eventually people figured it out as engines began to be pulled apart.

there are no "newer" parts steel or otherwise in this trans and any year can develop 2nd gear popout. it has to do with the 2nd gear dogring becoming rounded ever so slightly as to make engagement less "engaged" than it should be. i would imagine that given porsche discovered after many failed 2nd gear synchros and warranty repairs ( mine 02 x50 ) that by shimming the gears altering the gear stack placement, the propensity for failure was mitigated if not all but eliminated in the later year 996 turbos. that may be why it isn't heard of as frequently in later MY 96tt's. but again, no different parts, per se.

i have always heard the gbox detent can act as a preventative, but will not reverse any damage that has already occurred, though it *may* help so why not try it, seems wise. if a car has the dreaded issue though, it is at best a stopgap ( albeit cheap ) *preventative* measure. it would certainly be worth a try if one had the beginnings of 2nd gear popout, but if and once it has popped out under load/downhill? all bets are off. on balance opening the trans is $3k min, while the detent mod is a hundred bucks and an hour. so i can see why folks try it.

congrats on the car btw. enjoy it!

I will talk to my Porsche Tech from Lober Motors that told me 2004 and 2005 were not prone to it, as you heard also.
