Identifying Tune

I have a new to me ’03 996TT that I’m trying to figure out what tune it has been flashed with. Is there any good way, if at all, to establish what venders flash has been put on it?

I’m the 3rd owner, and the prior owner had no clue what the car had.

Not that it helps necessarily, but she also has Tial Alpha 28s, Fabspeed Gen 3 exhaust, and EVOMs DV (that I’ve switched for 710Ns).

If you PM me your VIN, I can check if we ever flashed it.

no, unless you get very lucky and someone recognizes your car (post a pic in this thread), or maybe try emailing tuners and see if anyone has your vin on record

EVOMs would be one of the vendors to check with since you know the prior owner did business with them on the DVs

That's a great idea with the VIN. I assume something like the last 5 digits should do? Who are the major tuners? I've read about EPL, GIAC, Softronic. Any others I should check with?

I don't have any great pics but here's one

Besides what I mentions above - Tial Alpha 28s, Fabspeed Gen 3 exhaust, and EVOMs DV - car also has D2Forged VS1 wheels, PSS10 coilovers. Anyone recognize this?

Odd the prior owner never asked the owner he bought it from what stuff was on the car. I would def check with EVOMS since it has Fabspeed exhaust and their DVs.

Thanks for the help guys. It’s gotten me a little further.

I did establish with Thomas’s help that the car has had a GIAC K16 tune back in the day. We don’t know if that’s what’s on there now, but it’s at least one more data point.

Now I need to go through and figure out which versions of the A28 turbos I have, what injectors, what MAF, and whether I have a 5 bar FPR.

if the maf is in the backside of the airbox ie: the oem location it will be an oem maf. if its a blow thru system ie: the filters are in the i/c area or on the turbos then its most likely a ford maf located at the front of the t/b and blow thru ala protomotive.
if you have injectors either 60lb or 72 lb then you should have a 3.8 fpr not a 5 fpr. the 5 fpr is a shortcut to adding fuel without changing injectors. its rare but not unheard of to run both bigger injectors AND a 5 bar fpr

pics of the engine bay will help

I'm pretty confident that the car has stock sensors and fuel system but I can always use your guy's help to confirm.

Picture time:
MAF:

TB Sensor

Injector

Not so great pics of turbos but might have enough clues for you guys to identify (will have to jack up car to do better)

those actually look like the old K16/28 hybrids which were the predecessors to Alpha28s which have Tial Stainless hotsides. Not ball bearing and basically uses K16 hotside. Like Tony said stock maf and stock injectors is what u have.

I made just over 720hp (crank) with the old 16/28's. I agree you can still wake that cart up!

She does have a water port, but it's not plumbed. Does that mean these are BB CHRA's? I will address the water lines if I stay with this setup.

Which puts me at a crossroads. Part of me wants to just swap to a some billet K16s with tune, sell these, and call it a day. Other part of me wants to stick it out with these, as even though they are the older A28s, they are probably still technically superior to the K16, K24, etc turbos in terms of spool and top end. Or are they?

Some reasons are that this is ultimately a DD, and I only need so much power. Also, it's a slippery slope of mods to support more power - injectors, clutch, etc.

If I do stay with these, any recommendations or injectors/5bar/tune? Which tune as I'm not sure which company has the most experience with this specific turbo?

Thanks Tony and all for all the informative replies. I am taking note and weighing this in my future tune search

I want to dig a bit further to understand if I have a 5bar FPR or not. Though I am leaning with just doing a 5bar with the lower complexity, cost, etc. Having 91 octane in CA really limits the useful boost levels so I figure I likely won't shoot for that much hp (and supporting fuel) beyond what a 5 bar will support. Hopefully, I will still glean all the spool and response advantages over stock.

Got a better pic of the center section. Still journal?

Confirmed that she has a 5 bar this weekend.

Question - How much hp does the stock fuel system with a 5 bar support?

While it's probably not able to support the full use of the turbo's, I am octane limited for hp anyways with the **** grade 91 in CA.
