Stock Throttle Pedal
SubscribeGroup,
I have recently upgraded my sound system on my 2001 996TT and was underneath the steering wheel location tying up some speaker wires. Somehow I slightly pushed on the gas pedal sideways and it popped backwards. Upon examination I noticed the metal ball going from the pedal mechanism to the cheap plastic connection that rotates causing the drive by wire cable to move was out of the connection. The plastic connection was broken off so it was impossible to re-snap the metal ball back firmly in place. The pedal would stay in place with the rubber outside material pushed in place but about a 1/2 lb force pushed backwards on the pedal would break the connection causing a no throttle response situation.
I temporarily duct taped the broken region and this helped alot. The cost of a new factory pedal was about $330.00 but I found one in great condition on ebay for $50.00. I believe the pedal was already broken when I purchased the car several months ago (probably from a detailer accidentally breaking it and then just pushing it back in place). I'm just glad I found it and could fix the problem for $50.00 instead when on a trip.
The tow, dealer upcharge, labor, overnight stay could have been about $1000.00. Also the fact of being very dangerous if you lose throttle with no place to pull off.
Now it works like new and the retrofit took less than one hour.
I was very suprised on the cost cutting Porsche did for this pedal but I believe it is ok for non-track driving. Just try not to hit it too hard with your foot sideways or when you are working underneath the steering wheel. Just an fyi.
