Catless,,No trade in then??

I was told by a fellow PCA member that Porsche dealers, Chicago, IL. area at least, will not take a Porsche in trade if it does not have cats on it....He has a catless 996 turbo that the dealer will not take until he gets cats on it..
Anyone else know this to be true,,state laws different??
I don't think some of the members will care because our modified cars get sold to individuals anyways...

I do not know for a fact but I would bet most dealers would expect all cars to have original emissions equipment as if not it could come back to haunt them.

I'm sure laws vary from state-to-state. A small B-lot type dealer in the middle of North Dakota or New Mexico would probably take it in.

Big dealers will not take it but small ones will. The small ones who knows they can sell modified cars (Jake's Motorcars for example) don't care. Big dealers don't want to be responsible for a car that might not pass emissions.

You would think that the Porsche Dealer would try to make even a lower bid then and then put an exhaust on,,, since I would believe now there are no warranties from Porsche now.
But I can also see that depending what else is done that might open a can of worms..

dealers hardly ever want to touch a car, they didnt want to take my friends car that had techart rims, they could have sold them for thousands and bought a set of stock carrera rims, made a very nice profit, well worth the effort imo, i guess it wasnt to them though

Not too surprising. In Chicago I'm sure they have emission testing laws. With catless, even if it "passes" the obd, its still illegal. As a dealership located in the city, they may have to ensure all cars meet emission requirements to sell it & title it.

I'd say if most customers picked up a Porsche, they would be appalled to find out months later that it didn't have cats and didn't meet emission requirements. Especially when they go back to the dealer and try to buy an oem exhaust at dealer prices. A lot of Porsche owners aren't active forum goers or modders who would know that it could be easily reversed.

I believe by law a dealer selling a car has to provide fresh emmisions certification as part of the sale.

Not it Cleveland
I purchased my car from a Porsche dealer, they give (well give is a strong word coming from a dealer, I should say issue) you a temp tag.
In order to get the real tags the car must pass an e check.

With my car it was still under warranty so any problems would have been covered.

It is against Federal law to operate, import or otherwise disable or tamper with the emission control system, including the catalytic converters, on cars operated on public roads in the US. No new car can be produced or imported into the US that does not meet federal emission laws. Catalytic converters have been mandatory on all US cars since 1975. Fines for tampering with the emissions system on your car can reach $ 10000. That's why a dealer won't touch the car with a ten foot poll. Surprising considering how long these laws have been on the books and the penalties or breaking them someone would attemp to tade a car in to a dealer without them.
