from EBWerks to Speedtech, my impressions
I just hate to see someone that has put time in developing something to be copied but that's how it goes,,I understand..
We all see it...Back when we introduced our X-Flow "modular" design exhaust for the 996TT, it was a virtually non existent offering. We were the first to offer a 3" X-Pipe that I know of - fast forward 6 years and now look :-)

Here is a Link to Ebay, they are not cheap but they do sound good.

Thanks, never thought to check eBay for his stuff. And nothing protomotive does is cheap, but you do get what you pay for to an extent. Thanks for the info.
The install was a breeze and I was able to do it in an hour after work this Monday night. System and component quality were all top notch and the instructions made the install a fun project.
The first drive was a little strange because I was used to the noise and vibration of the old system. It's been three days now and I can't stress how much I wish I would have bought this system first. Everyone is different and has different needs but for me, the noise level and "smooth" tone of this setup is perfect. I can carry on a conversation now while driving, hear music, but still have a fantastic engine note in all situations from idle to WOT to freeway cruising. I'm running Alpha 28's and supporting mods and at my power level I don't feel any restriction or performance penalty from the addition of a muffler. In most exhaust threads people say all 3" systems drone but this one does not. I know drone!
My point is...don't go for the wildest exhaust you can get because the novelty wears off in a hurry. Also, finding a vendor that has some history and is likely to be around for a while will help make sure your investment isn't wasted if you need to change to quieter tips, insert cats, or make other changes later.
The reason there are so many exhaust threads on 6SO is because these cars are not easy to make a good sounding exhaust for without introducing undesirable traits. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I'm just trying to help others avoid the pain I went through.

Guys I am hoping to end some of these thoughts weather the "direct" X design robs power and torque or not. I understand on 1000hp+ Set ups it will cost you power, but the question is does to cost power in the 500-700AWHP level.
In about three weeks I will driving down to EPL to get my new set up tuned by Tony. I was thinking that after we are all dailed in with my exhaust on, that I will unbolt the x section (got to love this system being modular) and leave the straight pipes on and see if there is an increase. I should (hoping) be around the 620-630AWHP on his dyno so this would be a good test for a moderate power level test.
If I pick up 5-15 I will leave it, but if I see 25+ at that level, I will see what John and I can come up with other then straight pipes (I WILL NOT RUN STRAIGHT PIPES ON MY CAR).
Thanks
Bobby Ali

This would end a lot of speculation. Please share the results after you are done! I have a hard time believing that a well designed 3" X section will introduce enough turbulence to create a significant amount of power loss on a moderately modded car ~600WHP but a real-world test on the same car, same dyno would be great to see!
John
Have you ever considered making a muffler section that would bolt in where the cat bypass pipe is now? You know ,, something straight though without a lot of restriction but might tame the 3" catless somewhat.

I’ll chime in before the horse runs wild. Before I made the EBWerks exhaust I heard every exhaust under the sun that is marketed here on 6spo/rennlist in person. They all sounded like ehh to me. Since mine is being compared to speedtech I’ll comment on that exhaust first. One of my close friends has a speedtech exhaust on his car. We dragged raced both of us from 5th gear, from a 60 roll all the way to 160+ and it was dead even with me on a stock exhaust. As were accelerating from that speed I was not impressed for a $3,000 exhaust with the noise it was making. Sounded very stock and it appeared no net performance as we were dead even.
I heard 911 Tunnings exhaust, and that sounded much better—started to somewhat get close to what I wanted but not there yet. I heard the Tubi exhaust, that just sounded like a louder than stock exhaust for $6,000.
Now, I think I know what happened. I bought a car that tuners concentrate in getting HP to go faster in a straight line and that’s it. I wanted a car that I could take it to the track- compete with GT3’s and kick their *** and sound wicked like a GT3.
Every time I went to the track, you can say I had an exhaust note envy of every car at the track because every 996 Turbo I came across regardless of exhaust sounded like **** vs. any other car (except a miata).
Long story short, EBWerks exhaust came about. Yes it drones. But it crackled, made a beautiful sound pitch that no other exhaust can make for a 996 turbo car-period. BAR NONE. I have had people ask me if the car has a GT3 motor because it sounds so good. I have been asked to if a sound mic could be attached to the car at the track because people wanted to get a clip.
Ever since I had it on the car, people would come and complement me on the car being the best sounding car out there—even when GT3’s where present at the track. The best achievement is when I have RACE teams in Germany+Sweeden+Findland+England, and across America that I have NEVER done business with – know my exhaust and refer clients to me because they tell their customers “ EBWerks is the ONLY company that makes an exhaust for turbo cars that comes close to sounding like a GT3 cup car”.
Every customer that shots me an email, I tell them the exhaust is loud and it drones- but it is the best sounding exhaust you will have above 3k RPM. The only way I’m willing to recommend this exhaust is if you are a track guy- or have a really hardcore personality. That is my customer base. If you track or want a loud car that sounds epic at 7k rpm and willing to sacrifice the lower rpm’s.
My friend with his speedtech loves it. He is in his 50’s – doesn’t want anything to loud just a bit louder than stock to get by. His wife in the other hand…well she wants a GT3 so that’s all I have to comment about her : ).
If you drive under 2,800 EBWerks exhaust will drone. If you drive above 3,000 rpm the drone is not bad at all…quite frankly if you drive a Porsche in the 2,500 range, you are doing it wrong. I have a GT3 now, which it stays above 3,000 rpm in normal day to day driving and it is with an exhaust that does not drone in any RPM’s. If you want to lug your motor around so be it- that’s a different story.
In conclusion yes EBWerks drones at low RPM. The exhaust is meant for a track guy’s or really hardcore individuals. As for power, it makes power dyno at 498WTQ and 428WHP when I dyno it – it loss power for Todd’s build car on the dyno but somehow it went faster 60-130? I don’t know. All I know is my old turbo hauled *** at the track and made any GT3’s go and hide- -everyone whom heard it loved the note- I’m not trying to sell any to you guys- as I no longer make them.
P.s. Example Johnspeed- he wanted my exhaust for the longest time- i told him it is not for him- if he drives his car DD and trying to lay low and wants no drone. I did offer him my exhaust when he was going to do his dyno day so i can get a none bias dyno against other exhaust. Problem-- no other tuner stepped up -- I did. : ) - I know my exhaust makes power.
Now that I have a GT3... i think those group of individuals and I have more in common ( track guys ) so there input and my input is mostly on the same page...

IS EBWerks still around?
If so, why do you not have to be a forum sponsor and use a @EBwerks handle since you are pumping products? I thought that was a forum rule for 6speed that vendors advertising had to be as such.

Not pumping anything. No longer make the exhaust. Just straightening defending my side- Micheal bought the wrong exhaust for the wrong application + personality.
I want to make it clear that I am not bashing EBWERKS exhaust either. It is made for a purpose that the builder already explained.
I agree with it being one of the best sounding exhaust for an exotic / racing experience (also love the merge for flow reasons)! I am also blown away by the sound that comes out of the EBWERKS exhaust and was the 1st exhaust that caught/GRABBED my attention for crazy exotic sound!
BUT for the overall car I was building, it didn't suit my needs as an over all exhaust for an all around machine I was building.
Sincerely,
Bobby Ali
