996TT as a Daily driver

How are experiences with a TT as a daily driver.

I am talking about a short (3-5 mile daily) commute in surburban setting. I know that short commutes can sometime be worse than longer runs over time. Are there any issues with regular, short commutes with these cars (aside from missing out on longer weekend runs) if warm-up and cool down times are followed?

Daily driven TT here...no problems at all! I drive about 15 mi to the office and back. My morning commute is pretty much stop and go traffic for about 45 mins.

Since the 993, these cars are pretty much bulletproof engines. It's a car...drive it and enjoy!!!

I think most TT's on here are daily drivers (including mine). I love the car for daily driver, my commute to school is about 5 miles each way so sounds like your same situation. My stage 2 ECU and exhaust makes the car drive even better!!!! I do also drive longer distances often (50-100 miles) and the car is GREAT!!

Mine is a daily driver. Most driving in Chicago traffic. Outside of winter, I drive this car everywhere and love every minute.

the only thing about short commutes...(oil)

The risk in short commute driving is that the oil may never
get and stay hot long enough to boil out any water that
had condensed from the crankcase air. Also, the types of
blow-by contaminants are different and worse (more acidic)
from cold engines than from hot ones. The prudent thing to
do is to replace your oil on a calendar basis rather than a
mileage one. I'd change oil every 6-8 months in a daily driver
regardless of miles. I'd also be sure to use an oil with a
good amount of antioxidants. I recommend mobil-1, Motul
synthetic, redline and amsoil. These typically have twice the
acid-neutralizing additives of less-excellent oils such as pennzoil,
valvoline and Castrol etc.

There is no better daily driver "supercar" in my opinion. It gets ya' from A to B as fast/sedately as you want and then on to the track and back. A jack of all trades and reliable too. I think Joe has a good point on the short commutes though but that's not exactly limited to just the 996TT.

Valid point, but, in my case at least, a short commute distance wise(3-5 miles) does not mean a short commute time wise. Believe me, that 3-5 miles takes 30-60 minutes in Chicago traffic and I am sure the oil gets plenty hot.

Lou,

If you don't have a Tip, then you must have a left calf the size of a KC Chiefs linebacker ;-)

I had my 993TT for 3 years and put 39,000 miles on it as a daily driver. These days I have more cars, and drive my SUV most days. My C2 cab is driven second most, and my TT the least. But this is probably because my SUV is my multi-purpose vehicle, and my P cars have become more single purpose. I drive my cab more than the TT because we have great weather here in the San Diego area, and I really enjoy the top-down experience. I don't enjoy my TT that much in stop-and-go traffic, so I prefer to drive it on the weekend or on days I can avoid the rush of the commuting traffic. That said, both my P cars are bulletproof, and could be easily driven every day without worry.

I would not choose a TT as a daily driver in NYC but in a country setting and open roads I cant see it not being an enjoyable one, I would drive a TT everyday if I could.

Sounds like you are the perfect candidate for a TT Cab!

i think what distinguishes porsche from ferrari is their daily usefuleness and reliability. i have daily driven 4 TT's and 2 gt2's most recently. if i die tomorrow what would have been the point of leaving it in the garage?
just drive it!!!!

Actually, the Turbo has a very soft clutch pedal. OTOH, the new GT3's pedal is stiff and stays that way to the floor . You still get used to it, though. After driving a friend's GT3 recently , I almost put my foot through the floor when I got back in my Turbo.
