Champion v Forgestar
Am I a moron?
I need tires soon...I have 18in Rg5's
I like them, but seeing that set of ccw classics in the FS section got me looking around at other wheels. (Ideally that's what I'd rather get)
I like the Forgestar F14...reviews seem good. I'd probably stay 18in, pretty light weight. Obviously the price is nice too...
I'd go with gunmetal-ish color on my midnight blue car.

I have personally had good luck with Forgestar. My car is track only and I jumps lots of curbs. Any wheel can crack. I have cracked (and seen cracked) several top name brands and had issues balancing them, but my Forgestars balance easy and don't go nuts if the wheel weights fall off.
You can buy two sets of Forgestar for what some other brands costs, and from my experience doesn't make them any more durable, at least on a track setting.

By the way..I bought these to replace a set of "top of the line" 18" Fikse's...which developed a large crack in one of the barrels.
Forgestars and Champions are different caliber wheels. Champion is a forged wheel, which is lighter and stronger. Forgestar is rotary forged or commonly know as flow formed. Forgestar is owned by iForged wheels which is their higher end brand. HRE and ADV1 also use this process for some of their cheaper flow formed wheels. Forgestar powder coat is OK, it really isnt great. It is not uncommon for it to come off. On the flipside I really dont know of any custom wheels that can be had for the pricepoint of the Forgestars which makes them stand on their own as of right now. HRE and ADV1 both charge 2800-3000$ /set for their Flowform offerings, roughly double the price of Forgestar. CCW is around 3000$ for a set as well. I have gotten a handful of sets for a few friends and for the price they are tough to beat even with occasional quality issues.

I'm glad to hear that those of you who are running Forgestar wheels are enjoying them. They're a solid setup and we are also running them on various project cars here. Forgestar wheels are a great option for those of you who are looking for a light weight and strong wheel. They're flow form aka rotary forged.
Rotary Forged Flow Forming is a production procedure that turns the wheel (or rim section) over a special mandrel and three hydraulic rollers using tremendous pressure. The pressure and turning then force the rim area to form against the mandrel, creating the shape and width of the rim. During Flow Forming, the rim actually "flows" down to create the full rim width. The pressure applied to the cast rim actually changes its mechanical properties, so its strength and impact values become similar to those of a forged rim. That translates to up to 15% less weight when compared to a standard cast wheel. Our technological breakthroughs in heat treating allow us to increase dent resistance without having to make the wheel heavier.

kind of interesting to note that during the life of this thread, one guy touting the strength of the champions has since his post upthread, found that one of his 1000$ wheels has cracked..
while my $375 f'star has been plowed into a small boulder, taken to a wheel shop, and been ( luckily ) properly straightened. agreed, i'm not sure i would "track" it after that, as it may have impacted the actual integrity of the wheel(?), but in my area i'm canyon carving without traffic daily, and it seems like it's holding up just fine. i'm not sure what my point is, as i'm sure the champion is a better" wheel, but i thought it was telling nonetheless. at least i know how my wheel got bent!
while the other poster who cracked his rg5 doesn't seem to know how it happened! it's just an interesting side by side anecdotal, i thought....
i just wish they made the cf10 in 18's. but only 19+20's?? lol strange choices. still no better wheel ( for the dough ) than a forgestar. but i still wouldn't ever say that forgestar is to champion, what hankook is to michelin

I run Champion RG5s in 19", they were lighter than the stock 18" Turbo twists.
Champs are fully forged 1 piece monoblock wheels. That means a fully forged piece of aluminum was machined to make the wheels.
Forgestar have rotary forged baskets which means they are cast wheels which are then spun on a machine with a roller on each side thinning the metal with high pressure which changes is structure making it stronger. The centers (spokes) of the wheel are still standard cast.

no offense to the forgestar guys, but champion is leagues ahead of forgestar.. much better wheel.
HIX, im seeing a serious problem with your setup.. those rear tires are WAY too small .... what kind of tire is it ? judging by the sidewall pic, it looks like a yokohama or nitto? what size is it ? 315/25 ? dude its WAAAAAAAY too small for your 12" wheel. japanese tires run a lot narrower and smaller than their german competitors..
on a 12" wheel your options for a 315 are Continental, or michelin. that sidewall is way too stretched.
try a 305 30 tire.. it will fill the fender gap a lot better, and will fit your wheel better too(not to mention a night and day feel in handling and putting power down). also, i dont think you'll ever ever ever have a damaged champion wheel with a proper fitting tire..

that's what i have always heard and who could doubt it? but that's why the tale of two wheels was so ironic. you wouldn't expect forged wheels to just "crack". at least i know how mine got whacked!

Could you PM me a cost for that exact setup! and the best way to reach you?
That looks really nice!
Dan
The Champion wheel cracked due to an impact that occured before I got the wheel (or looks that way). I was also probably running too skinny tires on it as well.
I've purchased another Champion wheel and would keep running these all day long.
I don't think these wheels are in the same league...............

i dont blame ya.. and have no doubt its a *better* made wheel. just wierd that it cracked like that. i thought happened to you and you didn't know it! but i'd rather have champs than forgesatrs too. but f'stars suit my needs though.
Forgestar name is sort of like false advertising. Rotary forging is like an electric turbocharger, sort of the same thing I guess. Caststar is more appropriate. They have some nice styles but style without substance is a turbo badge on a non-turbo... Sorta sad.
