that would be great. would that mean if the cases aren't damaged you could maybe get in/out with replacing a valve and timing chain? "valve" or valves? how's that work?

In theory, yes. We'll see what else they find, but i think if they have the case open, i might as well replace some of the wearable components and replace the other chain as well.

I guess it really depends on how much the rebuild will cost.
I've seen used motors for 7k. A REAl Junk yard is your friend. Screw LA porsche.

And here's the bastard of a chain. They managed to find the last bit of it, so there's nothing floating around in there anymore.
I'm not sure how/when the damage to the chain from the last picture happened, but it doesn't look happy either way.

one cyl looks to be running dirtier than others...

looks like one cylinder is running dirtier that the others. maybe freshen up the piston rings while you are in there?

to re ring this motor you have to completely split the cases so, if your going that route might as well replace the lower end bearings too.

A couple valves are bent, so the valve guides need to be fixed.
And yea, depending on how deep they need to go, i'd replace the lower end bearings as well.
They were waiting for some tools so i still don't have a full estimate.
Oh, apparently there aren't any other chains one can use, just the OEM ones. Makes me a little worried given that the original went already, but not much i can do apparently. Obviously replacing both though.

only things aftermarket your gonna find are, liners, pistons, rods, bearings, gaskets.

good luck with the motor build. curious on what the bill comes to after all the talk of a 5k motor rebuild.

Couple more pictures that the shop sent me earlier today. Lots of shavings from the chain guides.

The engine is completely in pieces now. I'm not sure exactly what they waited for, but they certainly knew their way around the engine.

Teardown is easy.. Remember the part number on your case? 964.. Any air cooled Porsche shop can take it down. If they need to get "buy or barrow" tools that means they do not use those tools simply because they do not own the tools need. I hope I am wrong. If the shop is buying the tools needed form Porsche they will spend more then the 5k they quoted you.
