What is a 02 996tt x50 needing engine work worth?
My turbo snapped a timing chain last week and i'm trying to see what my options are.
It's at the shop right now waiting to get opened up to see what the damage is.
In the meantime, i'm trying to figure out how much it would be worth to sell as-is.
It's a yellow 02 X50 tiptronic with 83000 miles and in great shape otherwise. No accidents, the interior is full black leather and is in great shape.
It has the upgraded speakers, full leather, heated seats, auto-dimmed mirrors inside/outside.
Attaching a picture of it getting hauled away, latest picture i have.

Just a guess, but I would say with 83K miles, you would be lucky to get 10K for it as it sits. It can not be driven to test anything, so there are huge question marks. A new motor installed will be roughly 20K. A used motor, which is a risk, is less, but the whole situation is a big risk for any potential buyer. In this case, it may be worth more parting out, than as a whole package. I think the best option would be to find a used motor that is descibed as being healthy for roughly 10K and take your chances with it. That's what I would do. And if you don't like it, then sell the car running for market value and buy something new...

does running on 3 cylinders count?
but yea, I realize that not running is a bummer. on the other hand it's complete and ran until last weekend.
But yea, for now I'm just curious, mostly waiting to hear back from the shop about the cost to rebuild.

agree with the used motor scenario being the best option. unless you wanted to turn this into opportunity with a very expensive custom build, not sure a stock re-build would be "worth" it relative to future return. unless you're keeping the car, another story. i just think you could find a good used motor as others suggest, and that would be most cost effective and give you instant saleability at maybe ( ballpark ) 40k?. but here's to hoping there is some good news from your shop.

check with tim941nyc on a used motor.
rebuild labor os around 5k$ parts can be 5k$ if theres no serious headwork that has to be done. so its possible to get a new rebuilt motor cheaper than what you would get selling it broken as any turbo that runs will fetch at least 35k$

I saw some used engines on ebay/la dismantler for ~15k and I don't get why people recommend that over rebuilding the current one.
if it costs 10-15k to rebuild, it seems like a much better deal then a used engine which could have issues of it's own.
I guess it really depends on how much the rebuild will cost.

i didn't realize you could re-build for less than 10k and yeah it all comes down to cost.

my shop quoted me 5k for the labor. 1500 for the complete gasket kit and 1700 for the carillo rods. that 8200$ this leaves 1800 for unknown parts that are broken. I'm not talking full blown headwork, bigger slugs gt3 oil pump or anything like that. just clean the motor up replace whats broken and button it up. 10$ should cover that. again if you have to have a complete headwork done it would raise the cost considerably.
just my .02 the cost may vary in your area and based on the shop you use could be significantly higher

but anyone not near proper indie pcar shops are gonna pay a premium for ANYthing esp motor work. so not knowing the shop or them knowing the car? i figure add at least 20%. if at dealer? forget it.

I'd say that if you fix it and try to sell it, the car will be 'tainted' no matter how good the repair job may have been.
Cannot see you getting more than $35k for it once fixed (just my opinion and I am being generous).
So alot depends on whether you wish to stick with the car or move on.

figure no more than 60 hrs at 100$ per hr for labor. now a dealer? sure much higher as they have a huge overhead to pay for.
i think the point I'm trying to make is a rebuilt motor in this decent car with bring at least 35k$. deduct the say 15k$ in expenses and he pockets 20k$. sell the car with a broken motor and he will be lucky to get 15k$. of course I'm partial to a yellow turbo!
