That's funny. It's 2014 not 1914 when a million was nice sum of money. Don't know where you live but thats barely middle class money in Nor Cal. Here > $5M in assets is a good starting point to feel some sort of wealth.

Once You hit a certain point, It's not how much you make But how you spend it and save it..
Being realistic and living within your means can make you a happy camper for your life.
I know friends that make triple what I have made and I have triple what they have ,free and clear.
And I just retired comfortable at 55 from Fire Dept.
FORESITE in life goes a long way..Just saying.
Good Luck and the Best.

LuvPorsche is infamous around these parts
I agree with John, its not what you make it's what you put away that counts
55 that's where I plan on being retired also.

In this day and age, give me a million and I can make 5-7 million in 2-3 years (legally) .
The fun is in making the money.

Back to OP, how goes the transition ?

Eventful to say the least. Former employer came after my partner and I with bunk allegations, but had an in house (salaried...ie free) attorney make our lives hell and cost us a good deal of money. Meaning, I never really thought it would come to that, but finally put that to bed a couple weeks ago (long story)

We were still able to get up and running in July (which due to the lawsuit we were about 60 days behind) and got through our first project, and now on our second, which actually went faster than we thought. We are growing, in fact out grew our space already, which we anticipated when signing our lease, so that transition will be easy.

Overall, I feel fortunate in the success we've had and the lessons we've learned quickly.

Oh, and I still have my car

With a bit of deferred maintenance I admit, but if I can hold out just a bit longer, it'll be best.

It's like someone said earlier, trying to make decisions that affect long term positively don't always equate to short term relief, but in the end are better for the business.

Money is something you need in case you don't die tomorrow..

having nearly died tomorrow a few times that rings true..

**** the man I say... party today, drive hard tomorrow.......

I retired at 38 after losing all of my wealth... retirement is a state of mind not a $$$ figure.. my missus works 100 + hour weeks and takes calls Xmas Day and Hanukah... I just laugh... I am wealthy again but I could care less. I drink $50 wines instead of $15 Peter Lehman Shiraz... same difference... the sun shines the same if you are rich or poor

relax, drive your car with the right foot down hard... bang your missus everyday, drink a good Shiraz... all is good... I will be dead within 10 yrs... I could care less

I come from a very large family... working class

i like your take, though mine has been a different in that i have for the past few years attempted to advance the secondary educations of young women in their quest for knowledge. a pursuit i readily pursued with great pleasure and joy.

i now in my advanced years see the wisdom of moonlighting as a gigolo, mostly becuase i hear the bellamy brothers the other day singing "older women make better lovers" and while i'm not sure that's entirely true? they pay better than students in master programs, of that i am certain.

i figure, why not!? as it is,..and being retired i now..:

i walk along the street of sorrow -
The boulevard of broken dreams -
Where Gigolo and Gigolette -
Can take a kiss without regret -
and so forget their broken dreams.

You laugh today and cry tomorrow -
When you behold your shattered schemes -
And Gigolo and Gigolette wake up to find
their eyes are wet with tears that tell of
broken dreams.

and still we can blast twin turbo's with soon departed impunity LOL

thanks in no small part to those past present and future that serve the armed forces of this great country on this venerable day. we salute you.

rant off/
