How important is it to weld the coolant pipes?

 

it's more important for those who've experienced failures.

 

I'd suggest that anyone with these cars who's dropping his engine either weld or pin the coolant connectors as a "while you're in there" kind of thing. This way it's done on your own terms and not the car's - which will more likely be at a more... "inopportune" moment shall we say? You'll save the hassle and cost of transport, plus sleep a little easier at night.
