Catching Reverse Gate in 1-2 Shift

Not sure if anyone else experiences this, I often catch the reverse gate when aggressively shifting from 1 to 2. Moreso when I make a right hand turn from a stop and I'm bracing left slightly.

The shifter does seem to take reasonable pressure when I purposely access reverse, so I don't think it's a weak gate. Just wish there was a positive lockout that uses a collar or push down action like my other 6-speeds.

Any thoughts? Is there other shifter options that improve this (i.e. 997 shifter, numeric, etc.)?

have had my linkages pop out of place before (loosing 1st, 3rd, 5th) but never has it shot into reverse while shifting from 1st to 2nd, would recommend taking it into your mechanic, absolutely upgrading the stock linkage cables to cup cables (makes a HUGE difference) and also replace the stock 996 shift assembly with a 997 one (also makes a significant improvement).

ALSO, do the 2nd gear detent while your in there.

I won’t put the blame on the car just yet, as this could very well be a case of operator error or bad habits. My last manual had the reverse gate on the far right. So I was in the habit of putting gentle left pressure during the 1-2 shift – putting me sometimes into the reverse column. I never have problems with the 3-4 shift which has no detents or guides to prevent me from going into the 1-2 of 5-6 columns.

Finger seems to be pointing at the problem sitting in the driver’s seat.

I’ll keep practicing. Thanks guys.
