996gt2 with straight pipes

Hey all,

I got a set of FVD straight pipes for the 996tt/gt2 from a member on here. I was more curious than anything, and in no way want this to be a permanent solution to the lack luster noise given off by the oem can. I'm thinking BBi, USP, or a custom catless resonated xpipe for a long term solution.

For now, though, I have a verrry loud car. Cold starts are unbearably loud, and the time it takes for the car to idle at normal rpm can't come soon enough. I wish there was a neighborhood facebook group so I could issue an apology to them all lol. Drone between 2-3k is awful.

Having said that, the whistle and flat six tt noise is still intoxicating. It's a touch unrefined, but it doesn't sound like anything ordinary. I brought it into center city philly over the weekend on a date and people's reactions were . "wtf is that!?" one of the comments I managed catch. High revs is absolutely glorious...and I'm sure that all goes without saying.

Bear with me while I find the time and a buddy to get me a decent exterior pass video. Here's what I have for now...I'll shoot for this coming weekend for some more goodness in a non residential area before I swap back for OEM.

Bonus:

This past weekend I paid a visit to pocono raceway to watch a buddy test and tune his 240 for formula drift..at the same time another buddy running his RS5 in the ferrari concourse event. I invited myself into the paddock and found another 996gt2! It was a pleasure chatting it up with the owner, and glad to see his car gets driven as it was meant to be.

The videos don't do justice to the ear-shatter that is straight pipes... haha

Glad you're enjoying them! Also glad you've made your way to 6speed.

yessir! You're right, videos don't do it justice. Significantly louder in person...and jeebus the cold start is just comical.

for the time being, yes. On a side note, I had 'DSC LOL' as a license place on my old MZ4 coupe.

Same here (well daily as in, when it's sunny). Cold start is kind of embarrassing but once it's warmed up, NP.

I think the biggest problem with straight pipes is the fact that the sound doesn't match the power. Having a car that loud makes it feel slower.

When my brother had a gtr, it felt very cool to feel the G's with such a quiet cabin.

I used to have an electric cutout welded into the bottom of the downpipe on my last car. It was awesome to go from quiet/stock to a little rumble to all the way insane.

Been thinking it would be awesome to have on the 996 too...

The DMH cutouts are relatively low-profile. I think it could be done, it would just take 2 cutouts and a good muffler shop.

My catless techart is pretty loud on cold start and guess what I leave my house everyday around 6am . No complains. Ones it heat up it's not loud at all. My car whistles as well probably not as loud as yours but pretty noticeable.
