Unfortunately I have seen it go the other way to at the dealers..They know its our baby and they believe most of us have the money to put into our cars so they have there protocol for add on service.

Fortunately, at the dealers I've used, and I've used a number of them over the years: Merriam KS, Springfield MO, Wichita KS, Oklahoma City OK and in CA Sacramento, Fresno, Santa Clara, Fremont, Burlingame, Walnut Creek, and Livermore, the techs steer me away from unnecessary work/repairs.

Even if one suggested something that is no reason to have it done without some discussion to understand the necessity and the options or alternatives.

Some people skip the turbos because its sometimes hard to get out drain plugs and only a small amount of oil is recovered.

Myself and most of my other PCA friends do also skip them.

I used 0w40 and recently switched to 5w40 and the car is quieter at idle, the "marbles in the crankcase" sound is a lot quieter.

Only a cup or so drains from the turbos, it's pointless. Just drain tank and crank.

no porsche dealership drains the turbos either. ever.

Interestingly enough, I recently took my newly acquired 996TT to the local dealership for an oil change for the same reasons as the OP. I have been doing oil changes myself on my 87, but just didn't have the time right now. As the tech was working on the car I walked over to ask if he planned to drain the turbos, and he replied only if it was easy to undo the plugs. As the car had been serviced at another dealership regularly since new, they did loosen easily, and now next time I do it myself, I plan on draining the turbos. FWIW

can't say as i blame you. i don't feel an overwhelming need to keep a .5 litre or whatever it is of old oil circulating. but it isn't gonna matter. dealers? call em lazy, but none of em do it. we are different, though i myself no longer drain them. the first and last time i did, i got cavitation sounds which annoyed me to no end.

never again. but i change the oil often.

If anyone has the link to the DIY for future oil changes I would greatly appreciate it. I took it in since the dealer looked over the entire car since it is new to me. Hopefully moving forward I will just do it myself since I feel better doing my own maintenance.

It's about 0.1L both sized combined, literally nothing comes out don't waste your time.

I enjoy buying from ECS but shipping to the west coast kills me. It adds 30% to the cost of the product.

rmc1148 07-03-2014 03:17 PM

I'm lucky close by and shipping is cheap and fast.

The dealer buys the Penzoil in bulk so that is why it is cheaper. The Mobil 1 they buy bottles.

I drink the P-car Kool-aid and only run M1 0W-40 (per Porsche reqts) and change every 5,000 miles. I am also quite aggressive driving and feel it is cheap insurance.

That's a nice kit, will be ordering next time. Reasonable price, M1 0W-40, and no running around looking for the best oil deal. Thanks for sharing.
