Going in for 1st oil change at dealer-question on oil

The local Porsche dealer charges $199 for Penzoil synthetic 5w40 or $240 for Mobil 1 Ow40. My car is an 01 with 10k and my first oil change with it. I planned on going with Mobil 1 but thought it should be 5w40 as well. Input on which route to go?

The dealer buys the Penzoil in bulk so that is why it is cheaper. The Mobil 1 they buy bottles.

Doing it yourself was not an option :), of those 2, I would go

save my money and go with the Penzoil 5w40.

Do it yourself for under $100= its easy I don't even lift/raise the car.

I do want to ultimately do this myself, but need to find the DIY thread first. Secondly there are a few things I want checked by the dealer anyway so I may just bite the bullet on the first oil change.

10 qts of mobil 1 0-40 at walmart for 50$

Also make sure they KNOWS about the drain plugs and which is the important main one , there are threads on here about the dealer over filling because they didn't drain all of the oil out..
They really make a nice profit changing oil/filter considering its about $75 in parts..
Hopefully you will learn on your own,, its not that big of a deal ..

is there a trick or something to changing the oil in these cars?

As long as the Pennzoil is A40 (Porsche approved) you can have the dealer use that oil and save some money and not give up any thing in the engine lube department.

Not a bad idea to have the oil service done at the dealer. Gives the tech a chance to really look over the car. I had my 03 in for an early transmission fluid service (6-speed) and the tech spotted a leak and the transmission was replaced under CPO warranty.

You want to keep a close eye for leaks. A low mileage car like your's may develop some leaks as time goes by. I bought my 03 Turbo in 09 with just 10K miles on it but leaks developed as the time and miles accumulated. Most recently I had to replace the water pump, the RMS, the front diff axle flange seals, and the spoiler system all due to leaks.

Later you can do this yourself, but it is a bit messy. The oil from the oil tank just shoots out and splashes something fierce. Frankly I don't like to fool with it as I do not have a good place to work on my cars nor do I have any spare time.

There is truth to that ,,IF you have a reputable and good tech from a Porsche dealer..
Unfortunately I have seen it go the other way to at the dealers..They know its our baby and they believe most of us have the money to put into our cars so they have there protocol for add on service.

Wal-Mart 50 bucks for oil. Oem filter 25 bucks. I did change it myself without even lifting the car.

In AZ 5w40 for sure, will deal with the heat better. I'd even go one better and use a TD oil with ZDDP like Rotella T6 as many of us swear by. Either way, GL!

BTW, if you check online, you can find German filters online for just over $10 ea on sale periodically. When I do I buy 6 (have 2 P cars that use them).

I used ECS kit with OEM filter made it even easier= no shopping around.

deadbeatrec 07-01-2014 11:36 AM

i have a question, do you need to open all 4 drains to get all the 8 quarts out?

rmc1148 07-01-2014 11:40 AM

Some people skip the turbos because its sometimes hard to get out drain plugs and only a small amount of oil is recovered.
