Understanding options for upgrading exhaust
Understanding options for upgrading exhaust
I have changed out the exhaust on many of my cars in the past with APR, Borla, Stillen, Magnaflow but seem more confused on the options for the 996tt. A couple questions
1. I see 100 cell, 200 cell-exactly what is the difference with these numbers?
2. Then I see cat or no cat versions; is there a reason to do one over the other?
And truly for the most part aren't these all going to do the same-improve the air flow a bit and make a little noise? I plan on doing an ECU tune with an exhaust and want to get the exhaust narrowed down. So far I like the thought of the Agency Titanium exhaust but it is 100 cell which I can't (above)figure out what that really means. I like the sound clips and the tips as well but around $2800 that has to be some better options?

There is many good options around
Speedtech 911tuning Kline Esmotor and others
im looking for exhaust at this moment and i keep reading interviews
100cell i guess louder than 200cell and better performance its depends on what you like
other questions better to get answered by experts

Theoretically on turbocharged cars freeing up exhaust flow should gain some power and spool.
But if you are running a stockish setup you may actually loose.
If you find something that retains same O2 sensor config you should be fine,
but if you go with no cats or high flow you may need a tune or re-tune, this is what I'm going through now.

I have the Speedtech 2.5 X-Pipe w/ 100cell cats (along with Softronic Tune) and it is the greatest improvement you will do to your car. It is aggressive sounding and loud under WOT, however no drone at all. Oh yeah, and the extra 95hp doesnt suck either. It's glorious. Check the system out on Speedtech's website or on Youtube... can't go wrong.
Do a google search on the Agency Power stuff. Lot of knock off made in China crap out there... Any exhausts you consider, ask the manufacturer if they are using quality German cats like HJS or Emitech. I'd steer clear of any exhaust that has dubious quality cats no matter how the manufacturer wants to sugar coat it. German cats are pricey for a reason...

I checked out a local speed shop and they suggest an APR tune (I had done this on my Audi Allroad) and claim about 80 hp and 100 torque. I will add the exhaust once I narrow it down. They suggest Billy Goat which is a local AZ company I will look into. The tune runs about $2500 is that about right?? When I APR tuned my Allroad biturbo it ran me about $900. Is it the simple fact of the logo on the car? Just because its a Porsche we can pay more?
giac/protomotive/911tuning/umw. i would stick with..or at least look into those. you can get a tune from at least a couple of those for 1500 or even a bit less possibly.

They offer the GIAC but just state that APR has more R&D funding with more updates and better overall performance. Input?
Hi Steve,
You should give us a call or email/PM - I can save you a lot of money on the tune and bundle it with our exhaust for even more savings....be very careful with your exhaust purchase, a lot of owners make a mistake the first time and come to us later....I encourage you to read our testimonials.
Below is a copy and paste of an email I received yesterday. It is exactly as received with not one word edited and we get these types of emails almost every week.
Hi John,
I had the 3.0 X-pipe exhaust installed on my ’04 911 TT Cabriolet last Friday and let me tell you I am one happy camper. You tube video’s and sound clips just do not do your system any justice. I knew the X-pipe was something as soon as I went to pick up my car and my guy pulled me aside immediately and had a little grin on his face. Originally he seemed apprehensive because he never heard of Speedtech and threw it off as some internet sensation. But now he is a believer.
He fired it up and all I could think of was WOW so this is what my Turbo was meant to sound like. The sound was raw, unadulterated and like nothing I have heard on the street. As I left the shop with a huge smile I noticed my Porsche tech standing at the end of the drive so he could listen as I drove off. My immediate observation driving the car was the noticeable increase in responsiveness and low end power from only a simple exhaust upgrade. Then I opened it up for the first time and, holy cow, the exhaust was so aggressive and loud, reminded me of the Cup cars I recently saw at the local race track. What an impressive piece.
The next day I went to a local informal gathering of Porsche enthusiasts. As soon as I turned the corner heads began to turn to see what was coming in. I parked and a number of 911 owners came over to praise the sound and ask what exhaust I had. I even had a number of guys stick around until I left so they could follow me on the road and have a listen. I spent the whole weekend cruising, enjoying my “new” car and looking for underpasses so I could really crank it up. What a pleasure. My family, including wife and 4 and 5 year old sons love the sound and can’t get enough of it. I need to drop the top so they can hear it that much more. The sound only gets better each time I go out for a drive.
From the cold start to the “gurgling” on deceleration to the aggressive and intimidating sound at WOT, we love it all. Thank you and your team for creating such a fantastic piece. I couldn’t find a way to put this under the testimonials on your website, so I will leave it to you if you wish to do so.
Regards,
Peter

The best thing as far as tuning is support and possibly fine tuning there after. Also things to consider, are upgrade paths and how much is that. Before I even sell a tune I make the client fix all his issues like cel and boost/ vacuum leaks. I often send a Master Durametric cable along with a boost leak tester for free just to get that out of the way. That's in my opinion the best bang for the money as far as tuning- support is priceless. Mind you , 9 out of 10 cars have existing issues but no one addresses them- anyone can sell you a 3rd party tune but how many will actually get your car to run good. Good luck
