heat shields don't hold the heat but reflect it away from other components. blankets keep the heat in the turbo as expanding air helping to spin the turbine faster. same as using header blankets to keep the heat in the header and into the turbo.

In theory you are right but have had rapped headers crack/fail and reduces life of coatings= this was years ago so products may be better suited now. Just my 2 cents lol.

there is a difference between wrapping headers tight with wrap vs a blanket that allows expansion of the metal yet holds the heat in. this is the main reason folks move away from wraps to a blanket
coatings are much more advanced as well to handle the higher temps

Interesting I have no use for blankets but would like to hear other opinions. I know they have been around for quite a long time but don't see them used often. I have not seen blankets for headers but do on occasion see them wrapped in the same manor as I used in past.

i actually have a set of header blankets for the turbo. made by PTP and i was going to use them on my set but since i went with external waste gates I'm not sure they will fit. i have them for sale but if they aren't sold by the time i pull the motor for internals I'm going to try to install them and see how they would fit with my w/g

some ipd turbo blankets as well for my 3071 turbos

The turbos stay plenty hot as it is.

The biggest factor in how quick the turbos spool is their size.

But smaller brings with it other problems.

The 997 Turbo does it right with variable vane turbos. My 02 Golf TDi had this and it was a sweet turbo.

The blanket would keep the compressor side hotter which would heat up the intake air even more.

And help retain heat to cook the oil after the engine was shut down.

My Turbo has a fuse installed the keeps the engine compartment fan running all the time the engine is running to blow cooler air through the engine compartment and keep the heat exposure down to the other engine components.

Buy and install the fuse. That's the only mod I'd advise.

From what I understand, the impeller of the turbo will dump hot exhaust in any direction possible. Turbo blankets are supposed to decrease the heat leaching over on the compressor side of the turbo and at the same time causing heat to expand on the hot side to drive out the hot gasses.

In theory it is very sound, I would imagine that with this increased in heat retention, oil life will be greatly decreased due to exposure to more heat and turbo cool down may have to be adopted to prolong your bearings ?

Just my $0.02

I lean towards your better off without them for above reasons but am far from an expert.
