EVOMS airbox, power?
EVOMS airbox, power?
Found a number of indecisive(IMO) threads on this in the past, so...
I am thinking of putting a stock airbox back on my car and getting rid of the EVOMS airbox my car came with...
Has anyone OUTSIDE OF EVOMS, dyno'd(or improved time) their car to prove the EVOMS box makes more power? or is it just good 'marketing'...
Keep EVOMS or go stock?
Thanks guys,
Rob

^^ i am curious as to why also? i can see getting rid of the bmc like i did. but that setup is a bit more involved. i just couldn't stand how filthy that thing always looked.. and then there's the re-oiling ugh.
back to paper mahle and i have no problem throwing them away at 20 bucks a copy either. no noticeable power difference, just a tad more muffled sounding intake with stock paper. meaning bmc probably WAS helping a bit lol

I would go back to stock because it does the job and looks better in my opinion but you know what they say about opinions lol. Keep it if you like the looks but doubt there's any gain.
Porsche worked long and hard at extracting 420 HP from the M96/70 and therefore put a lot of thought into the air-box. The 997 was changed to incorporate an extra air-box hole, so this is a clue as to what is optimal. Agency power makes a nice carbon fiber unit that looks pretty similar to the 997 air-box. I would look into going with one of those or seeing if a 997 air-box would be applicable.
I think people forget that Porsche goes through multiple design phases with their parts. They test, refine, tweak, test, refine, tweak, test, and finally refine.
I had a very well known Porsche tuner who shall not be named here tell me that he has made more power on 996s with the stock air filter than any after market intake.
So not saying the EVOMS unit doesn't work, they make great stuff, but I think a lot of it is looks and basically breaking even on any HP that might be gained. So long as a part doesn't take away from making power and you can say it looks good isn't an entire loss. I think this is some of the thinking with parts like this.

As near as I could tell it was just letting more dirt/grime settle in/on my BMC. So I kept the cut box, but bailed the mesh element.
My air box is a hillbilly modded dual intake version of the 997t. it looks the same, works the same and I believe it IS "optimal" per the reasons you cite.

Yeah, nothing wrong with doing this. When I look for mods, I like to look at the newer cars (997/991) to see if the respective part is similar to what Porsche implemented. If it's not, I'm always skeptical. You have some of the best engineers in the world designing these cars, I'm sorry, I just don't believe somebody who starts a tuning business knows better than they do.
The oil based air filters destroy the MAF sensors in these cars.
The agency power air box is the closest thing I have seen to the stock 997 air box.
To me, this is all anyone needs on these cars:

Now, add this piece for the stock hole:

This is a sweet set up, just keep the stock air filter.

but i would venture you know more about this stuff than i do. but my airbox is working well, in fact so well, i think i will now refer to it as a "dual snorkel intake" rather than "hillbilly cuttop airbox" though the latter sings better

right again on the mafs. i haven't had a maf issue since i went back to paper. though i was using taiwan "refurbs" coupled with that bmc oiled filter. agreed, just don't.
The agency power intake is a copy of the Sportec intake FWIW. I blew 2 Mafs with EVOMS v-flow, so I ditched it. Ive been using the same BMC filter with the Sportec intake for 8 years with zero problems and no cost to replace paper filter...LOL
^ how often do you clean the bmc? i'm of the opinion that a properly oiled bmc will not *necessarily* cause maf issues. but man, do those things get dirty. there's no doubt you can hear a quicker, tad more air, with a flat panel filter.
No, it just removes one half of the intake box and replaces it with a hold down frame which keeps the panel filter completely exposed. Great concept, but not when the filter is right on top of the engine where it sucks in all of the heat.
I bought my car with the EVOMS airbox installed. It originally had the oiled filter with it which destroyed my maf. I then changed to the new oil less filter but now I have issues when I leave the car out and it rains hard. Water collects in the box and then gets sucked in though the filter. The car hesitates and judders and has all sorts of issues until I dry out the box. I see that there is a pre-filter sock that might help prevent this issue? Anyone experience this?
