Double Din radio
There's an install kit for the 911 sold on eBay that was developed by someone I believe is a member here, you can find posts about his building it for his car and he has apparently branched out a good bit. Using his kit will make your life easier and he's apparently pretty willing to help out with information on wiring from what I've read - you can search and find a good bit of info.

One critical bit of information - after 2K2 the 911 went to a fiber optic setup that makes putting in an aftermarket radio a good bit more hassle! The speakers have crazy Ohm ratings, aren't standard sized, and you have to replace a good bit more hardware to do it.
Note: Alpine makes at least two 8inch screens that will fit. If you've not got a NAV system in the car already you will have to move the A/C controls down by the shifter like the 2K1 cars apparently were built. You can get the cover to o over the A/C controls from the dealer, online, or a spiffy carbon fiber version from DB Carbon
I'm about to have an 8 inch Alpine system installed myself and have the cubby and A/C plate numbers around here somewhere if you need them for the A/C controls move. This guy is doing my install and is a member here too DIY Mobile Audio
Hope that helps!!
P.S. I could really use a good source for that thin "cupholder" for the 996 or some advice on repairing mine if anyone can help. Comes out a quarter of the way then sticks and refuses to stay in. Drives me CRAZY and Suncoast wants my first-born for a new one! :-O I'm tempted to superglue it shut!!

Both of those cupholders are awesome! I'm a C/F freak and am struggling not to buy a TON of the DB Carbon stuff! 32Krazy I like the iPad solution but if I did that I'd have to break down and pay for data too. My cellular bill is already putting someone thru college I swear and I would hate to pay yet another $30 a month! lol How's it sound?
ACMF are you getting the information you want or are we putting bad thoughts in your head with the iPad? ;-)

iPad... hmmm it was a low cost upgrade from stock but not what I'm really looking for. i would like a double din full speaker amp swap but thats $$$ so this was cost effective at about 200$ and some time . sound is the same as stock but i have access to my 200 cd's i have loaded on my iPad as well as 4g gps etc
the cupholder on the floor. i bought 2 but didn't use it on the drivers side. your welcome to it if you want it.
Oh I recognized the cupholder for sure, color matched to boot! Stereo is indeed expensive but after hearing my friend's (linked above) and his non-droning exhaust I want something nice. Honestly you could drive a nice DSP and amp with that iPad and get good sound! The Alpine HU is serious dollars and some of the Kenwood units not far behind. I really wish some of these IOS oriented units would allow Waze! For now it seems Alpine is in my future but the iPad solution is pretty attractive

i mainly wanted a bit of an updated look form stock and this was as cheap as i could find. folks at the car shows like it so i play like it was planned all along !!
I had a Kenwood double-DIN unit installed in my 996, although it was a different model. It worked very well. Here are a couple of quick things to keep in mind:
1. The OE speakers are the weak link in the system in terms of sound quality. If you want improved sound, then I recommend upgrading speakers and amps. I went with Focal speakers and amps.
2. 2003+ cars use the MOST fiber optic ring to connect components and amps. Earlier cars use copper wires. There are solutions to deal with the MOST ring, but your best bet is to replace it completely.
3. If bluetooth telephone connectivity is one of your main reasons for the upgrade then you should reconsider your plans. The interior cabin noise in the 996 makes it very difficult to use a handsfree phone.
4. You can install gps and Sirius/XM antennae on the front bumper, completely concealed underneath the front bumper cover. This worked well on my car and they were out of sight for a cleaner installation.
Good luck with your upgrade!

Pioneer, Kenwood, and Alpine all make receivers that fit this. My requirements were that I have a good Nav software and I was leaning towards Kenwood with their Garmin software. However read the reviews, mixed is an understatement :-( I have a Pioneer in my RSTi Subaru and while not top shelf for sure I'm not exactly in love with it. Read the reviews on their offerings, try to find someone who has one if the Nav is real important. I spoke to someone with an Alpine and was impressed, hence my choice. A BIG thing I wanted though was a volume ****, pressing volume buttons in a car with a stiff suspension sucks! My Pioneer drives me nuts in this aspect so the Alpine going into my car uses a DSP with its own volume **** lol. Some of the Kenwood units have ***** but you'll have to live with a smaller screen to fit it. I'll likely use one of these in my VW - talk about a crappy OEM Nav!
All of the units have plusses and minuses, try to play with them in person if possible and make up your own mind. Plain may be hard to find but some let you customize the interface to say show a Porsche logo when powering up which is nice. A good installer may also be helpful as they can give insight on issues they may have seen. Amazon reviews were helpful for me too.
