I could honestly care less about a car stereo as I rarely turn it on. Saves me cash as I'm happy with my old 2001 factory radio. My old home stuff was great to listen to but took up a whole room.
You guys are killing me.... I guess my old Crown amps and Magneplanar E-stats speakers are from the days of the bygone... Might have to find a 911 SC to put into the garage next to all this technology in my TT.
Still trying to find a way to mount the spare technics turntable in the back seat of the TT
The 996TT feels alive and exciting at any speed which results in a more rewarding driving experience. The GTR only excites on a track (or doing highly illegal things on the street). But as I drive 99% on the street it results in the GTR feeling distant because it makes everything normal seem too easy.
Good point Jindotli.
Which begs the next question...
In a manual shift, how do you all feel about the 991's ( w/ sport chrono) bringing up the revs to computer perfection for you?
I always felt a "real driver" can double clutch and bring up the revs to match during the downshift as part of the mt driving experience...
Since I'm in a 997 I'll still be old schooling it...
I agree with most of these comments. The other thing for me that stands out when comparing the GT-R to the 911 is the physical appearance of the vehicle. The 911 has a very organic shape, even in the newest iterations. The GT-R looks like a robotic catfish. I'm really not trying to offend any GT-R owners and I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but to my eye the GT-R is very ugly.
996tt=analog? pasm, abs, t/c, awd hardly analog. want raw dangerous power? try a viper with twin turbos. no nannies and mechanical desire to kill you!
hah, ok fair enough. nearly last of the *mostly* analog porsche turbo's. i mean yeah its no 930 lol hell, i remember my first ride in a brand new aluminum 427 ac/cobra in 66. THAT.. was analog

i think that has something to do with the golden ratio.

As a musician and (amateur) music producer, the thing that I most important lesson that I learned about music is how DIFFICULT is actually is to produce pop music. Yeah, I love to hate it, but to make it, and make it well...is actually pretty hard.
See, simplicity is sometimes hard to achieve. It's easy to noodle away on your guitar, or slap out bass rifffs, but to pare it all back and package it and make it sound GREAT on any system...is NOT easy.
Modern music, no matter how you may hate certain genres is produced at a much higher level of quality than the old stuff. Much I hate to say it, I cringe now listening to some old music that I previously thought timeless...
That said, I have no interest in the 991, GTR or any car that drives itself. For me, I can't think of a better combo than my 996TT and GT. The GT is a 2014 and an auto, but the sound....DAT SOUND...you play the car like an instrument. Speed has nothing to do with the enjoyment. That's pure analog experience to me. (okay, maybe AAD)

One of the things makes a human being human being is that human beings make mistakes. One of the things makes a human being great is his/her determination and devotion of the perfection. I would not want the computer to take that opportunity of proving myself away from me.

So "AA" is for 996tt, "D" for GT?! Nice combo though.
Again, I have no interests in proving one car is better the other. They are all great cars. They all serve their purposes very well. My point was, GTR was a game changer. But some of us, including myself, may not like the new direction.
On the other hand however, we should probably thank for its existence. We know Porsche will not make any more air cool nor mezger engines. MT will probably will disappear soon too. New cars will have more computer assistance. I think all these will eventually make our cars even more desirable in the future. Just my opinion.

this will have to be the first time i can recall ever disagreeing with you so completely. though my days in the music business are largely behind me, the artists with whom i worked, and played are timeless, and while there are a few great ones that still manage to slip past the gatekeepers from hell, the music made is by and large regurgitated and sonically inferior, owing primarily to the intrinsic inadequacies of mp3/digital format(s).
but this is another topic for another forum, that said at least royalties have not *yet* been eliminated lol.
morris levy once said to a guy trying to collect monies owed him for a hit record on roulette;.. morris says to the guy:
I know GTR is a great car and it is fast. I admire it for its technological achievement. However, I also dislike it. Why? Not because people think it is faster than everything else. But because ever since it was invented, the entire motor world has shifted from "analog" to "digital" state. Everything is all about computers now. The driver's involvement has been largely reduced. The interaction between human and machine is no longer important. Human are replaced by computers. I can see the direction of our beloved Porsche is heading by looking at the PDK-only 991 GT3. I am sad.
It is like ever since Philips invented the CD for music world, we are now all live in this cd/mp3/ipod/iTune/blah/blah world. There are always many people going to argue that how good/clear/transparent/convenient digital music is. To me, the deep, rich, emotional analogue sound has long gone. And I missed it.
I think 996tt is one of the last high end "analogue" equipments. After that, it's all "digitalized". There are always many people going to say that newer and more computerized cars(like GTR) are better. But I don't care and will never want to trade my 996tt for any one of those. And I am glad it is the "ugliest" 911 which made the price more affordable so I can own one. To me, 996tt is more like a GT1/959 except is it a lot "cheaper".
So what is more important? You car is faster or you are faster?! The answer is very clear to me.
Please forgive me for my poor English...
Very well said. Completely agree, especially the part in bold. I want to be fast in a car because I mastered the DRIVER techniques necessary to do so not because 17 computers are working feverishly to correct my mistakes. I truly HATE the direction the auto industry is going in, including racing. Paddleshifts, ABS, TC for everyone. Driver is hardly much of a factor any more. Just drones now with the car doing all of the work.
I've never liked the GT-R for this reason, and it has spawned a massive movement of copycat, including Porsche now with Rear Wheel Steer. I don't like them either. If anything I'd buy a Z28 except I don't trust the LS7, a new Z06 except I'm not really sold on the design and there are some QC issues, or the Viper which just feels overly brutish and has a super tight cabin. I keep circling around to just buying a 996 GT2 or TT for the street since my current is track only.
BTW My 996 TT has no AWD or PSM. Still ABS but only because remote reservoir systems are hard to come by.
In a decade or two, driving will be done from plush beds in the cockpit with occulus glasses on and a cup of coffee. Fall asleep, who cares, autopilot.
self driving will be a privilege reserved but for a select few and anything fast will have to be on a racetrack like de's for the few that can afford it, while the govt in knowing what is best for us will take us out of the drivers seat in the interest of "protecting us".. from ourselves lol
