I finially understnad why I don't like GTR(first post)
I remember paying $2000 just for a 120 W (rms) Yamaha amplifier back in 1983 when I was in the Air Force.... we all had these crazy powerful stereo systems in tiny military quarters. My room as a cadet officer was 10' x 9' on the 3rd floor of a building (facing the sun all day) in the outback with zero airconditioning at a base where temps hit 120F during the summer. So there were 50+ guys on one floor all with crazy 100W+ stereo systems... one guy even had an 8 track.
Loved that old stereo with record player and super duper $1000 cassette player. What a waste of $$$$, for the same price of my whole system I could have bought a 1/4 acre of land in Perth.
GTR = great engineering for what they wanted, an uber quick car.. they are just too bulky heavy and unwieldy pour moi

I've driven a few PDK equipped Porsches and GTRs on the track and actually have found them quite boring. It does work perfectly, the first student I had, I was trying to find something to complement him about so I mentioned his down shifts on braking(like that's really hard with paddles) and he looked at me with a disappointed face and said its in automatic mode. I get wanting every advantage at top level racing but for club racing, Time Trials and everyday fun, Give me analog feel of actually driving the car.
The GTR is, and always will be, a technological marvel. I have been following GTRs since the 90s and the car has always been way ahead of its time technologically. The appeal of the GTR has always been its amazing technology to add and enhance performance. The car is the perfect representation of Japan, using ultra-high technology to make life better, safer, and easier. But are they? That's always going to be subjective and GTRs will always have objective cons in that ultra-high technology (unfixable bugs, expense, complications, etc). As many have said, they are a very different animal.
I don't hate the GTR per se but I get and agree with the OP's post. Cars today are so computerized they fall victim to Moore's Law and when I'm spending $100+k on a car, I want it to last a while.
We have already approached the era of, "But, can you drive your car? Yes, it drives itself!". We're using technology to mitigate technological short comings. It's ridiculous. With that said, just like any evolution, one day the 996tt will be a 57' Chevy and there will always be guys that yearn to go back to simpler times.
As I have gotten older, I appreciate cars now that I never would have 10 or 15 years ago. I don't compare cars like I used to, I think it's pointless these days unless it's class to class/apples to apples.
What I can't stand is people constantly comparing cars, which is faster, which is better, which is this, which is that, it's all hugely subjective.
IMHO, the 996tt is the last of water cooled Porsches that let you really feel the road. It's a very pure car that way. Even the 997.1 doesn't give you the same road feeling. I will say the 997.1 is a wonderful car and drives beautifully, it's a refined 996tt. But I personally want to feel the road and be a little scared driving around with 600+ HP so I respect the power. Today, you can have 700 HP and it's not even violent, it's just amazing how smooth power delivery is due to software tuning and drivetrain advancements.
I think the 996tt will be soon be looked as the last of the pure Porsches. You can make an argument for the 997.1 in that class too for sure, but I still think the 996tt is just a little more raw, which I like

Here is a different perspective......
In 2011 I got a 2009 GTR with 9,000 miles. I then for 2500.00 pushed the HP to 550 ATW or 650 crank. I now have 70,000.00 invested.
If 650 HP is not enough , then 5,000.00 more will find 800 HP......
A new 911 TT would have cost 180,000.00 ????? or so.
With all the money I saved, we then found a 996 GT-2 and still have money left over to burn at the track 10 times a year............. for years.
Oh, and the GT-2 is a fabulous car but can't run the lap times the GTR can, with the same driver at 2 different tracks.........
Is the GT-2 really fun with NO TRACTION CONTROLS ....YES...
It is great to have your cake and eat it too..............

comparo
Not exactly an apples to apples comparison. A 2009 911 TT wouldn't cost you $180K. Additionally, a new 991 TT with a reasonable selection of options will exceed $200K. That being said, I'm glad to hear that you're happy with your choice.

I would like to eat my cake too. But if it has to come with Viagra and Cialis in it, then forget it. I would not want it and there is nothing for me to brag about either.
