I had the main thrust bearing replaced last year. While they were in there, they replaced 2 synchros and a bunch of other stuff. I did the GT2 tap & drill conversion at the same time (I supplied the parts) and the total cost was around $ 6K.

I've heard mostly good things about S car go, other than overcharging their customers. They are on my short list of options.

I dont want to get rid of the car, because i said that 2 times allready to previous cars I owned and I ALWAYS lost tons of money. I'm keeping the car, no matter what I can let it sit and look at it--- I think you should just park it, let it sit, start every month and find a better place to fix the car like stated above maybe ship the car to get it fixed to good shop, some places charge for labor like its a Ferrari - sure shops charge a lot , they need to stay in business as well, but some prices, like dropping the motor for example it costs so much, (now depends at what shop and state) call few more shops, you allready know what it is. go there and let them show you again.

not tho throw this thread offtopic but,

As far me, I trust only two people that are local, Markski the tuner and one mechanic that wont lie to me, and i can trust them.

what really bugs me, is this : and it should be a recall, AT LEAST one part:

1) master slave cylinder and damn accumulator
2) blowing coolant hoses
3) 2nd gear pop
4) many members reported: crap coming out of the vents, when you turn the AC on

again, sorry to hear that and I hope you put the car on the road soon, sorry for offtopic crap
I'm DEFINITELY not getting rid of the car under any circumstances. I thought I was going to have a good year with the car and I was really enjoying the diff. I never got to really drive it with the new coilovers and everything else has been done to make the car exactly what I want. I even had the coolant lines done for a sense of security while I had the engine out for new lifters.
I never thought the trans would start to let go at 53k miles though.
My wife and I just had a baby this year I just don't feel the urgency to dump another 10G into her older sister (the P-car).
Fortunately I have a $h!tbox accord to use as a daily driver. I'm going to do my research and hopefully not get burned.
The way my indy diagnosed the car and quoted the repair certainly isn't sitting well with me. To listen to it and then quote $6200 for labor to replace unknown parts on the main shaft has cost them my business this time.
I know a fair price is closer to 3K for the labor and most of the bearings that are in there cost less than $400 list. I'm tired of getting overcharged and I need a break from spending on the car. The first step is admitting you have a problem

sticking to the new plan will pay dividends if not prolong the agony.

and if you aren't too picky about where the info comes from that might save you some grief down the road? I'd be only to happy to share if it ends up helping.again, I have guided others in this regard with success. it's just that I have myself gone down this road at least twice, and had g50 boxes opened on three separate occasions, my offer to help guide you to alternate sources that wont bend you over still stands, should you ever feel the need to avail yourself of it.

good luck.

good luck.
I 100% appreciate the guidance from those who've walked this path already. That is why we're on the forum, isn't it?
I'm not opposed to having the repair done in so-cal and driving it home if it makes sense and I can't find a reputable place locally that doesn't charge the Silicon Valley tax on top of the P-car tax. Did you have yours done in the LA area and you know of a trustworthy shop?
I am sure I can remove the trans myself if I need to ship it somewhere for the work and I'm open to that option too. I'd pay someone to reinstall it properly once it was shipped back in repaired condition.
There are lots of options and I have as much time as I need which is really helpful.

i do, and someone in your exact situation after i made a referral, pm'd me to tell me that after consulting with "them" by phone he was going to take the chance and go with them as the info they shared and the number of times they had cured this very issue was apparently enough to sway him to have it done down here. i've probably sent 3 or 4 guys to this shop, and i only dont mention them publicly as i'm not sure they "want" the business ( really ) and also because its up to the customer and shop to work out pricing and details.

i dont put folks business in the street if i can avoid it? but will share what i can with you via pm. the last guy was in norcal also and if i have any of the pm's ( i tend to delete ten upon receipt ) i'll ask him if he'd share his experience with them, or it may in fact still be ongoing, as it wasn't that long ago!

hit me up if you'd like, and if you think LA is an option. its not a shop per se? it's a few loosely affiliated and highly regarded porsche racing pros and techs. one of them does though have an actual shop where they would pull the box first prior to having the trans genius r&r it. for 6 hours labor in/out plus the actual trans work ( the 4k +/- )

not for nothing.. these guys are KNOWN, if ya get my drift. i'm not bein cagey, i just won't bandy about their names out of respect.

Well, I've had my cooling off period so I decided to call s car go and rob was extremely helpful. I described the sound in detail and I asked what it would cost to replace internal bearings that require the whole transmission to be disassembled. He said less than 4k for the whole job and mentioned that he had a pretty good idea of which bearing it is.
Thanks for the tip, and to 996ttx50 for sharing his repair spot also. It was just a matter of distance that made the decision easy for me. S car go has a pretty solid reputation in Northern California so I was really surprised how reasonable the estimate was.

4k is reasonable given you're not bringing them the box? or even if you're bringing the car and they have to r&r the box? you have to account for the 6 hrs it takes to drop it, then reinstall it after the work is done. it is of course easier to have it done locally and also all in one shot. mine was similar to that, but i do have the ability to get the box out of the car at least and over to the mystery genius that works on them here locally ( that want NO advertisements of his efforts, praise or acknowledgements.. strange..)

while steve getting it all done WITH new some new gears and the wavetrac ( though my gearbox opening, refreshing and repair for approx 3k included that also ) can only be explained by my belief that he is tennesee mafia with tools.

i wish you the very best mrmaass and that this will finally get er done properly, as I'm sure it will.

it's great to see this level of fortitude. while I've been "lucky", very lucky, i still have had my share of travails and help that has tended to mitigate some of the difficulties, not the least of which has come from associations I've made here.

good luck man. this time it'll get sorted properly.

correct i did remove the trans and deliver it to them. ( i forget those that either can't or don't want to do the removal stuff) so my cost will be less. this is a small shop (3 employees) and they main work is aircooled pcars but the owner is very familiar with modded turbos. he spends a lot of time at road atlanta just up the highway from his shop

^ i always say and am only half kidding that if it weren't for the "bro" deals and breaks i get i wouldn't be able to eat properly because of this car. parts and labor and good advice.

my first trans opening the dealer looked at me with a straight face and said "its gonna be 8 large to open an r&r whatever else it needs etc "if we find that is was NOT a warranty issue and you munched a gear".

i said get me the svc manager now and get pcna on the phone stat. i do not get fu*ked lol. most of us, particularly those of us that cannot actually PULL the box ourselves are seriously at the mercy of whomever we end up taking the car to. therein lies the pitfall.

thats why it's so helpful to hear from guys like us that have had to change the bearings and know distinctly what a "whine" from the box means. you walk in TELLING them that's whats up, and it changes the line of scrimmage.

Thanks for the replies...I too was wondering how the work could be completed for under $2k. That's definitely a good deal even with the transmission delivered outside the car.
I would do the removal, but being a new dad my wife is really getting weird about the amount of time and money I spend on this car. My feeling is I'd rather sacrifice money to save time to spend with my baby girl so I have to compromise on doing some of the more time consuming tasks myself.
I like working on the car but now I'm more picky about the things I tackle in my garage vs. paying a "professional" for.
I'm still happy with a quote of < $4000 compared to the robbery that the first shop tried to pull. They would have charged double after parts and labor!
I'm dropping it off in two days and I will post a follow up with the results in a couple weeks.
