Low Oil Pressure Light?

Hey guys,

I have a question about the oil sending unit on the 996 TT X50. I was driving mine today and the low oil pressure light came on. The gauge never droppes bellow 2 bar and while at speed the gauge reads just in-between 4-5. Light only comes on at idle, anything above idle the light goes out. Gauge doesn't seem to jump around at all.

Does the oil sending unit act as just a warning sensor or does it operate the gauge as well? I know these gauges or not 100% accurate. I've also been reading that the oil sending unit is a common failure. But since the gauge is reading normally I am a bit freaked out. Oil level is in the normal range as well.

Car is home now, i'm guessing having it towed to a shop would be the smartest idea.

There is no specific sensor for the light only. The signal from the oil pressure switch and oil level sensor goes directly to the cluster and the logic into the cluster take car of the low pressure light....

I have problem from time to time, usually when I drive through crappy street, it jumps up and down - check the connector to the sender unit, see if that helps--- search on this board to find the right-location

Thanks for the input guys, I located the sensor and wires this morning. I made sure they had a good connection but the light stays on even though the gauge reads 2 bar. This is over my head for a DIY. I'll be taking the car in to a local shop here in Dallas on Monday.

Low Oil Pressure Light?

I did mine myself but my symptoms were clearly the result of electrical malfunction.

It would drop to zero then stay then PPP back up to normal. Seemed to mostly happen during or just after rain.

Replaced it and never had another prob.

Thank you for the recomendations LeftLane, I have a long standing relationship at Autoscope in ParkCities. The car is on its way to them right now, fingers crossed this is a simple fix.

Good call on the oil sender unit, the guys at Autoscope replaced it and the problem is fixed. I decided to get the oil changed and spark plugs done since it was in.

Thanks guys for the quick responses and helping me not have a heart attack.
