There is a 2003 996tt 6MT in the exact color combo I've been searching for (not an easy find FWIW). It has some mods that I find tasteful and I would have likely done: GT2 front bumper/spoiler, Brombacher exhaust, Bilstein PSS9 coiloilvers, and built in laser radar detector, and B&M short shifter.
Other mods include GT2 oem turbos, GT2 intercoolers, GT2 EvoMS clutch slave conversion, GT3 RS flywheel, GT3 RS clutch, FVD headers, EVO silicone hoses/Pop-off valves, EvoMS Diverter valve, and carbon brake pads.
Dealership had the car inspected and dealership placed 2 new rear tires, repaired hood latch had new battery and tray installed, and 2 new O2 sensors due to check engine light (I verified with receipt).
2 owner car, clean carfax, no accidents, asking $39k.
So my questions are:
1) I've asked for service history. Dealership doesn't appear to have them. Aside from the recent inspection on what was done recently, no other records exist. Only other history is what's available on car fax, which doesn't show much. Is this a deal breaker?
2) I've asked if any work was done on the coolant pipes and when spark plugs were last serviced. Sales guy says he needs to have the tech hoist the car and examine it again.
Based on the mods, does this car appear to have been tracked? My thinking is if the car was tracked, not necessarily a bad thing b/c if anything went wrong, the owner would have likely replaced it by now, esp with 70k miles. What I don't want is to buy the car and it ending up being a money pit.
What's a fair starting price? I was thinking $35k. Or is the incomplete service history a deal breaker? Thanks!

I am always skeptical of the dealer selling the car. I would find an independent Porsche specialist and have a PPI done on the car. A few hundred dollars can save you some big dollars - and if they do find anything, it helps with the negotiation.
"keep looking" for what?!
the guy says the car has a lot of what he wants. dealership seems to be cooperating with his questions. ask them for an ecu dump so you can read for overrevs 1 and 2's. there just aren't that many things that can catastrophically fail on the car. it sounds reasonably maintained and all paperwork showing this or that has or has not been done should not be a deal breaker at all! most owners service these cars fairly obsessively and "paperwork" is proof but nothing more. it's a 13 yr old car w 70 k miles. it's not a showpiece lol
i work on my car every week, it's in TIP TOP shape and i couldn't show anyone a receipt for an OIL CHANGE which i perform along with much more unnecessary and early than recommended service items. whether needed or not! BFD! lol.
have it independently looked at, given the once over and make an offer if its got what ya want. yes, 35 is fair. no service records isn't a deal breaker unless you're a scardeycat lol.
these things are tough. be thorough and make an offer btw..b&m shifters suck lol
just read thru the added mods on RL cross post. car sounds fine and its basically a modded x50 car flashed but not factory x50. just oem add on's. whoever did that stuff I'm guessing took decent care of it. have it checked out and yeah.offer 35, 37,500 TOPS.

The mods in the 2nd paragraph are a bit overkill, and I would be ok with out them. I'm not sure if these mods add to the driving enjoyment, increase reliability, or if they will later break down,
Speaking of which, what are the benefits of the GT2/GT3 clutch slave/flywheel/clutch and the other valves?

these mods are simply upgrading a k16 car to a k24 car. the clutch is a simple upgrade from the factory setup.most likely done as a package to the owner at a performance shop when he owned it. no records are a bit of a concern but not a deal breaker. i would put a generous amount of effort into finding out who the owners were and if the car was tuned and by whom. if it has these upgrades it is a good possibility it has been tuned as well.
has it been tracked? no way to tell. look at my car and you would never know from the paint and interior it spends more time running 1/4 and 1/2 mile events than cruising the street. does it matter? records tell the tale there. no need to put the car on a lift to see if the coolant fittings have been addressed. look at the 3 fittings by the water pump. either pinned or welded. if not it will need to be addressed at some point. plugs no big deal if you can get them to do it fine if not do them yourself. hydraulic spoiler? check for leaks. its a known issue. price seems on point you might get a few $$$ off but dealer don't deal much unless the car has been on the lot over 90 days

Just from the description I see no reason to run from it. The OEM turbo clutch system has "issues" and the GT2 clutch pieces are far more reliable and provide more feel. I'm not certain but I believe that GT3RS flywheel is a lighter weight piece. The clutch has been upgraded, this is good. The intercoolers are higher capacity but not much higher, a nice to have. I'm not sure WTF a pop-off valve is when it also references diverter valves. The DV are also failure prone (they leak) and cannot handle much higher boost pressure so swapping them is also an upgrade. Turbo are upgraded, same as X50 I *think* so an upgrade. So far so good except for this odd pop-off thing. Oh, check that exhaust for drone or figure a few grand to swap it. Make sure it has good working catalytics as well.
Now, fuel? Tune? I assume a flash but to what boost level and by whom? Get the revs read, do check out the coolant pipes, maybe find out if the GT2 nose was properly done for airflow if you want a negotiating point. Honestly to me the price sounds pretty fair and is a good bit less than what I paid for mine with somewhat similar mods years ago with fewer miles.

A buddy of mine was looking at the car in question before the previous owner sold/ traded it to the dealer. I have service records for the car. Send me your email and I will shoot them over.

all else, provided the car checks out by someone that knows what to look for and what is dumb minor maint stuff, is pure fear mongering! sheesh.
some guy keeps his car stock, disdains time honored and proven and even well matched bolt on mods, calls em "come beat me mods" LOL... and says "run, forest run! the sky is falling"!

this sounds like a reasonably well sorted car with bolt ons that ARE well matched ( seemingly and on PAPER ) and whats wrong with that? cost someone at least 20K to do all that sh*t!
one way to determine a well tracked car? look for pink faded caliper paint. its not a fashion statement. ask me how i know lol

Definitely do the PPI if you are interested in the car. Though, if at any point, you feel uneasy about something then walk away. I walked away from a couple before settling on mine.
BTW - there is nothing wrong with either keeping it stock or modding it. Its your own car and your own rights to do with it as you wish. Neither is wrong. We all love our cars in our own ways.
