Just picked up a 996TT, question about drivetrain clatter

Hey guys! Just picked up an 03 996TT (loving it!) this week and have a quick question about drivetrain noise. This car is completely stock as far as I know. When I was driving it home last week I was stuck behind a semi at about 45mph in 6th gear. With the windows up, when I applied a little throttle (between 1000 and 2000rpm) I would hear a clatter until I applied more throttle or got about 2000rpm. I didn't think too much of it since there was no associated vibration and everything seemed to work correctly.
.
Fast forward to today I finally got to drive around with the windows down at many different speeds. There is definitely drivetrain clatter at low RPM while the clutch is engaging or engaged below 2000rpm. It sounds like the single mass flyhwheel clatter I've had in other cars. Though it's not very loud. Do these cars clatter a little with the stock flywheel? I suppose it could have a single mass flywheel, but I have no way of knowing since I don't know who the previous owner was. (bought from a dealer after auction)

Other than that the car is perfect. Everything works, nothing leaks and it's a blast.

Thanks! Looking forward to learning all about and working on this car in the future.

first thing is your lugging the motor hard. theres no need to running 45 mph in 6 th gear. at that speed your at 3rd at best. motor wants to rev let it.

What? I was cruising at 45 mph and added a tiny bit of throttle. It's not like I'm going WOT from 1500rpm in 6th gear. THAT would be lugging the motor.

My question was do these cars normally have drivetrain clatter at low rpm with light throttle application?

not looking to argue with you. you asked. at 45 mph in the highest gear your likely to hear all manner of noise. a dmfw won't have any noise at all. if you think 45 mph in high gear is a proper way to drive the car its very possible this is the wrong car for you

No, I asked about low rpm clatter. This happens in first gear at 5mph too. The 45mph situation was simply the first time I heard it.

I just introduced myself here and am trying to pull from other people's experiences with the car and you go and attack my choice of gear for rolling down the highway. You still didn't answer my question.

Thanks for not helping at all.

i did answer your question. dmfw has zero chatter. as for attacking you get a tougher skin. your in the wrong gear for the speed plain and simple.

It's you're, not your. There is absolutely nothing wrong with cruising down the highway in 6th gear at 1500rpm. Hell, my S4 tells me to upshift to 6th at a steady 35mph which ends up being about 1100rpm to save fuel.

this isn't a s4. again its very possible you have purchased the wrong car. i would suggest a prius. it seems to meet all your gas saving requirements

If you have a DMFW I would say low rpm rattle in low gears is not normal. High gears I would not be surprised if it rattles, among other things.

How many miles? Could be a worn clutch release bearing, mounts or shaft guibo. Or something loose.

I dont think he is trying to attack you but it might be coming off wrong.

These cars seem to like a higher RPM than you average daily driver. The lowest I cruise around in is at 2500 as below that it seems to not be a happy camper. Meanwhile, my daily which is an IS300 seems quite happy to cruise around at around 2000.

Its your car and your choice. As far as clatter, I have not experienced any in mine no matter the RPM or gear.

Did you have a PPI done on the car prior to buying it?

My beater subaru forester rattles in 5th gear (any gear really) low rpm when I lug it around....because racecar. It also doesn't like to be lugged around just like the 996tt. In fact it says not to do that in the owners manual.

32krazy knows his ****.....

Congrats on the new car!

Not sure if its the issue with your case but.... One of the first things I noticed about this car when I got it, is that it really lets you know if you are lugging on her. I mean pretty much all cars do but this one really speaks up.
