Coolant gone, time to replace fittings
steve, i think you "know" me well enough in here to know that i "cheap out" on stuff that i "think" i can. i swear to god i would just jb weld these if it ever came to it, and take my chances. that's how much faith i have in the ability of that crap to do the job. but thats just me. i would never argue against either your experience or your working knowledge of how sh*t works. least of all this kind of stuff.
my *feeling* is that while pinning/welding ( and that new kit is it vivid that is selling?! ) coupled with proper re-fitment is undoubtedly the optimal way to do this. yet, i myself would just jb weld em.
all this needs to be qualified in that i'm not *road coursing* with any potential "victims" behind me. bottom line is i defer to your experience and would still goop em up with that cheap sh*t lol. sorry to say, as i do pick my battles with this car, and feel i could get away with that as a "fix".
who really knows.

miles and i just got home from a seriously XXX canyon run. i'm thinkin this ol motor has heat cycled enough to have become inured! lol. i can only hope.
hah! i am so sure you're right. next time engine out, i'm gonna give em a serious look and take it from there. though i'm near 130K

Its like a time bomb, same as with timing belts on few cars that needs to be changed every 60k+/- you never know when its gonna pop, i'm going to wait until mine pops.
drop the motor and fix all the pipes. funny, that everything that is weak on 996's, I fixed, wondering whats next, after I fix the leaking front radiator.

I've used JB to repair a cracked cast iron exhaust manifold, it held for several years until the car was sold. There are likely other epoxies that might work even better but surface prep is huge to do it right. I certainly wouldn't be applying JB at ambient temp but at something warmer so it would flow better and perhaps knurl the fitting a bit to provide some tooth. Pin it obviously. That would be something I could do myself provided I had access, welding isn't. Not sure which way I'll end up going when the time comes, just hope it won't show up as a surprise when it's time.
thats the odd thing. some motors pop fittings at an early age. some due to heavy track use. some sitting at a red light. some never do. i don't remember if the guy with 400k on his motor ever addressed them. theres no rhyme or reason as to when or why they let go. one thing is for sure they do !!
now I'm sure you are a hundred percent right. a few of us guys from here were taking a leisurely run up one of my back roads and as we ambled up the hill the dudes car let go and the coolant fittings popped. we couldn't have been going over 50 so no rhyme or reason is exactly right. I guess I'm just hoping I balance my carma by having 2nd gear pop out twice. because that other shi*t I do not need.
ahh, the a**end is so purty, i hadda brighten it up HA. i LOVE me some tawainese xmas lights!
wait til you see the lights ima put under the wheel wells

remind me never to buy a car from you...
I dunno, I'm on the fence with these too. Prob is, I do not believe in welding cast parts period. Yes, if done properly it will hold. (Hell, I've even seen welded Porsche engine cases)! But so will epoxy. Both to a certain point. And welded castings are susceptible to fatigue failure due to vibration and expansion/contraction. Just like epoxy. Pressure testing will not catch this.
I am leaning towards the pinning fix simply because of KISS, and because someone who does lots of this stuff and has miles of experience endorses it.
I've welded cast iron blocks in the past and they held= but they were beaters lol. I like pinning for all the reasons mentioned above. This type of repair is a personal call with no real guarantees either way. Put this subject with religion and politics.

My Pinned fittings are holding fine and I have been pretty heavy on her with all the heat we are having. If I traded for a 997tt, the first thing I would do is pin them...the end! BTW..my Renteck Tip Tranny build has been hanging strong as well. I have been trying to see what it can take as I might swap a six speed in it if it fails...lol
I did the JB on an exhaust manifold on a friend's car just to get it through emissions as the air leak was setting a MIL on the O2 next to the crack. To my surprise it not only held but held up WELL until the car was sold years later. I never expected JB to take the heat but we warmed the manifold before application and did it in two stages. They DO claim it's been used to do things like that for farmers so I figured it was worth a shot. I'm not sure it's the right stuff for this as it can be brittle but with proper surface prep it really seems to do well. In my mind the fitting in the hole does most of the sealing work anyway so long as it's pinned and can't move around. Thin the epoxy enough and get it to flow, should seal well.
i think as has been said, surface prep might be the key to that stuff actually working ok long term.
it's a good thing i cant remember all the well known porsche community names that seem to actually think jb weld is viable and not as awful as it sounds for this as a preventative, let alone a fix. it's not my debate, only what i have heard said.
perhaps it has something to do with that they were merely epoxied in the first place? i dunno.
