Drag strip tips
Drag strip tips
So I hate to admit, I've never taken a 6Speed car to the drag strip (at least not for standing start drag racing). I've been to the strip with a few DCT cars in the past.
Attending a private rental tomorrow and looking for some general tips on the start. I'll be running the pump map (no E85 for this visit). I'm not looking to break any records or parts, just having some fun and it wouldn't hurt to put up a good fight.
Appreciate any feedback

what tires? anything less than hoosiers don't worry about a burnout. just scuff them to get any dirt off. pull up to the staging light. stop. wait until the other guy presages. (race courtesy ) then ease forward to stage. once there it gets a bit difficult. do you have 2 step? launch control? if you have a 2 step. ease the clutch to were it will barely start to grab. floor the throttle to engage the 2 step. once the third yellow goes out drop the clutch and get ready to shift quickly.
BE WARNED! hard launches will and can kill trans and axles. axles should break first. any wheel hop at all get out of it. if you can't or won't launch it hard then just stage and when it goes 3 yellow start letting the clutch out and drag it a bit to get going then let it out

- R888
- RWD Conversion
- ProEFI Antilag
I'm thinking I'll start the day off just easing into it to get a better feel for what the car is doing, then based on how the day goes play with the ProEFI feature.
R888s and launch control isnt the best idea, at least if running a 30 tall tire, R888s are great for street(racing) or even road racing. I recommend you to use 35 DRs or stay on regular street tires UHPs, RWD isnt going to help with R888s, lower the pressure at least or make them spin a bit if your LC rpms can be set-up, dont go over 5000rpms and dont use too much BOTL as you risk to damage things, or launch by foot as sometimes you will get pretty good times, I managed 1.79 60ft on PS2 in 4WD on unprepp surface
I am RWD with R888s... lets say it is a pig to launch.. usually get 2.2 s 60 feet.. my 0-60 mph times vary from as low as 3.5s to 4.4s... usually near the latter
I have used the LC-2 step about 20 times.... I find my best 60' are 1.95s even using the LC... my best traps are just by launching off the line at low revs... the car prefers "feathering" the clutch... if you drop it at launch that is where you break things....
I only power shift 3rd-4th.. tried it once in all gears and it was a debacle
I would concentrate on getting a good trap speed rather than sensational ET

Something about the Wastegate cycles having to be updated after the new intercoolers. Haven't had a chance to go back down

Launching on the manual is not that smooth compared to other manuals.
Best 60ft I could get so far is 2.0, I've pulled 1.6 on other cars in manual on street tires.
First if you are having problems slipping the clutch just try to roll off the start, its easier on clutch and less embarrassing than bogging off the line.
Can you build boost or have a good launch control?
Try playing with tire pressure also. I found 25 on PSS hooked very good on prepped track but i tended to bog initially. If you are still bogging hard go up a few psi.
At first I went around the water, but found going through and spinning the tires(not a burnout) was good enough to clean of the tires for the line.
Good luck and post your results.

Thanks for the input. Had a fun day with friends at Atco, slowly got better throughout the day-but I still need a ton of practice. The car, on pump should be in the low to mid 11s I'd think. (Back when the car was on stock I/C, Garth ran it in humid Florida heat and pulled off high 11s)
My best for the day was 12.2 w/ a 2.0 60ft. Played around with different launch approaches to combat the hop, for me I had the best luck with smoothly letting out at ~4K. There is definitely time to be shed at the start, hopefully next time I can go with a more experience 996 driver.
I also had a tough time getting into 3rd at WOT, noted a few weeks ago as most likely a result of bad shifter cables. Sometimes I'd hear grinding and I immediately clutch in and try it again, I don't seem to have this issue unless I'm really going at it, and even then its not every time.
Air temp was 93 degrees, with on track temps over 100. The car with the new (to me) AWE intercoolers maintained temps fairly well.
Looking forward to getting better at this, even though I know the 996 isn't a drag race car per say. I completely understand the comments of a GT-R being "cheating". When I had mine it was no trouble laying down consistent runs over and over

Also you gotta take it to redline, no short shifting.
Glad you had fun....
had similar issue with my built trans in 3rd. turned out it had brass stops on the syncs (stock turbo syncros) not the gt2 steel syncs that was supposed to be in there. so steel syncros in 3 and 4 and installed my wavetrac into the trans. new bearings shims and 1800$ later its all fixed waiting on the motor now....
Drag strip tips
1/4 mile on the 996 is very hard and don't worry as only 3 996tts of which one was a gt2 ever ran 9s ( assuming we have everyone listed). I've spent years developing the know how , and most of it isn't really the bells and whistle but rather small details. 17" rims, a few set of tires, endless race gas fuel testing, and Constant plug changes. And yes, parts break and they break a lot. My diff went and 3rd got hurt with the best parts on the market.
So good job
