I think this has to do with the fact that finishing the carbon fiber to look good and have consistent weave (necessary for looks more than anything) is the labor intensive part and thus where the money is not weaving and adding the setting material...

Be careful about inexpensive carbon fiber products. I have seen too many that fit poorly and/or crack. Also, there are numerous examples of low cost carbon fiber pieces that require so much prep work to achieve a paint finish to match that on the metal parts of the car that the apparent low cost becomes far more expensive than buying a good piece to begin with (In one instance, a person who bought a $900 wing spent almost $3000 more to have it prepped and painted and it still never fit as well as the original. In another, I saw more than 100 hours being spent on a race engine compartment lid/wing to make it as good as production line metal parts.).

I also would never use a CF hood w/o hoodpins of some type. The resin used to hold the stock hardware for the hatches is not reliable enough to trust. I have seen many fly open on people who have installed them w/o hood pins. As far as stength of the hood goes, if its built propely you should be able to jump up and down on it w/o damage. They have good memory and bounce back from serious force. I have run them over w/o damage...

usually the difference between ultra expensive ones and less expensive is vacuume bagging to prevent airbubbles in the laminate, and the size of the cloth pieces. Extra large peices will provide for a more consistent weave across the hoods with no seams or mismatches betwen pieces, smaller strips do not...

enjoy...

I agree. Fit and finish are critical. At best, $8-900 for 26 pounds. Hmmm, tough call for me especially with some safety and long term quality concerns.
