Is engine noise normal?
Ok, so I just went out and recorded mine.
Mine is bone stock, previous owner was ocd about maintenance (as am I, LOL) and car runs flawless.
The video that OP posted (post #23) of the actual car in question definitely does not sound right.
(I think you have to click on the pic below to get to the video, I uploaded it to Flickr)

where rumbling is coming from
dont buy THAT car. that sh*t ain't "normal"! a bad rod sounds about right, bout to be thrown
run dont walk.
All the mezger engines do rattle, some do rattle loud than others but, thats normal. Mine does rattle a little bit.
The mezger is the best engine ever build. Even the 991 Gt3 Cup cars got them.

Definitely sounds different than the one I'm looking at.
At this point I'm probably going to pass on this car unless the owner is willing to fix the cause of the engine noise.

I showed my video to a local well respected p car shop today during lunch. Shop owner also says it doesn't sound normal. Felt it wasn't the IMS shaft, but wasn't sure; needed to see the car in person to be sure, but didn't recommend I buy the car until he checks out the car.
It's too bad too b/c the X50 is an option I would like to have, and the coolant pipes were welded as well.
Your hunch of it being run hard is a good one, since the coolant was leaking due to the owner tracking the car.
I would like to know for sure what exactly is causing this sound and the estimated repair costs, but I don't want the deal with the hassle of bring it back and forth to the shop.

yeah for the 2nd time there is no x50 option on earth worth buying that car for. all one porsche guy has to do is hear it.. once.
leaking and rattling like that!? holy cow man dont be mad! unless your a flagellist lol

Might be the worst sounding 911 I've ever heard. That is definitely not the normal IMS rattle - not by a long shot. Run - don't even bother trying to figure out what it is. There are a ton of cars for sale that don't sound like a dying diesel.
Nonetheless I've moved on and used this vehicle as a learning experience on what to look for.
Appreciate the feedback everyone!
If it sounds like the one in the video of post #23 in this thread, that is an example of how they are NOT supposed to sound. My suggestion is to have a listen to a couple 996TT in person to compare so that you can get familiar with what they are actually supposed to sound like
