Is engine noise normal?
I have to chime in with the others. That's not a healthy sounding Turbo.
My best advice is to give this car a miss and resume looking. The first rule of used car shopping is there is always another car.
If you wanted to, if you can, get the car up in the air and with a very Turbo savvy tech with you see if you can locate/pinpoint the source of the noise.
I think it unlikely but if it is from somewhere not inside the engine, say from an accessory drive component, or an exhaust leak -- just tossing these out as possibilities -- then you have some comfort in knowing the noise is not from inside the engine.
However, the noise really doesn't sound like a accessory drive component noise -- though a real bad water pump could make a racket -- or an exhaust leak -- it would have to be some exhaust leak -- so unless you get the car in the air and the tech's time for free it probably isn't worth the effort.
