What have you guys done to prevent this?
This just happened to me, and if you're not aware of this problem read on.
The problem is, when e.g. washing your car you pull the rear viper arm of the windows.
If blow the steamer on the viper arm it can collapse back into the window.
Because of the force of the spring loaded arm the viper blade goes out of posititon and the metal parts hits the c-pillar before it slides back into place.
Leaving a U-mark.
Question is, has anyone any nice tricks to solve this?
Well now I don't feel so bad knowing I'm not the only one this has happened to! I went to AUTOZONE and purchased a replacement wiper with no metal in it. Then, I had a vinyl shop make me two "ghost black" American flags. I covered the scratch with one and had the other made reversed and put it on the opposite side same location. I know it's "hokey" but I will be replacing the front and rear bumpers soon (very soon) and I will strip car to metal and respray using Standox base/clear.
I don't think I've ever had this happen to my car but I can see a hairline scratch that might have occurred in the distant past. Looking at the wiper I'm not sure how the heck it happens? Removal is probably the best option honestly as it's not exactly sexy having a wiper on this car but I've left mine on thus far. Bumper plugs has a plug for the hole I think.
Small black wire tie through wiper blade and around lower part of arm. Problem solved. Barely noticeable. You only really notice it when washing the arm. If you flip the crimping mechanism to the other side of the wiper, the rest of the tie is even less noticeable.
Oh... now I see what's happened :-O Wiper dropped down vertical and the arm came down - OUCH! The wire tie idea is a good one I may have to do just in case, much appreciate that tip!
Been there done that, got the scratch to prove it.
I noticed when I bought the car the previous owner had also been through this. His scratch was not as bad as mine and he did a good job making it almost invisible.
I used cutting compound/polish/wax/gloss enhancer on mine and it came out to the point where you have to look to see it.
Having said that, the first time my wife drove the car, she came in and asked where the scratch on the rear came from. Eagle eyes...
Thanks guys, i was aiming for a bit more discrete solution than a zip tie.
My friends will not stop commenting if i "zip tie" my porsche together.
I need the viper since here in norway when its cold the windows are covered in damp and i prefer looking out my rear window when backing out my car. =)
That's why I went with a wiper that has no metal strips in it. Take your wiper to an auto parts store and match it up with an all plastic one. It works great.
