HELP: Which turbo should I buy? GT3?
HELP: Which turbo should I buy? GT3?
I need help. I have been going back and forth between buying a GT3 or 996 turbo for some time now. I have just leaned back towards the turbo, since a parts manager told me that the Porsche child seats do not accommodate children between 20 and 40 pounds. Is this correct?
The primary use for the car would be sharing commuting duties with my M5 (50 miles round trip) which includes taking my 4-year old to school and weekend blasts. Most of my driving is on the Interstate and in stop and go traffic on city streets. There are very few corners to attack in my daily commute. I will attend 2 driving schools a year and maybe an occasional autocross event.
With this in mind, which of these choices would you recommend?
· 2001 996 turbo, black/gray, 6k miles, excellent condition, w/ Nav, and other minor options ($119k MSRP). Selling for $88,000 Porsche Certified.
· 2002 996 turbo w/ X50, silver/gray, 15k miles, broker states car is in excellent condition except the driver’s door skin had been replaced and refinished ($136k MSRP). Selling for $96,000 w/ 30 months remaining on factory warranty, with no certification.
· 2003 996 turbo, black/black, 2k miles, w/ Technos, small aluminum and others ($127k MSRP) Car also has Strosek F&R spoilers. Selling for $109,000.
· 2003 996 turbo w/ X50, seal gray/black, 5k miles, excellent condition ($139k MSRP). Selling for $117,000 Porsche Certified.
· 2004 GT3 new with minimal options at $5k off MSRP
This has been an extremely difficult decision for me and I want to get it over with so I can move on and enjoy the car I choose.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Hum... I know that a lot of people will disagree with me, but I like the Turbo alot better than the GT3. To me, the GT3 is just a Turbo engine, without the turbochargers, it also has the narow body look, which I do not like. The GT3 is great for its own reasons, it is N/A, it is light, it is RWD, it is a track monster, and is almost as quick as a Turbo. Still, for me, a turbo is the ultamate, the Turbo boost alone is worth it.
I am not going to recomend a car for you, but i will tell you if I think it is a good deal or not.
1. Ok Deal, you should be able to get in the lower 80's
2. I think this is the best deal on the list (only if it is in excellent condition). But if you are planning on modding, as I have heard, X50 is a waste.
3. Ok Deal, someone said that there was an '04 Turbo with 4k miles on ebay for 105.
4. 22k off MSRP for only 5k miles is good, but as I said, X50 might be redundant. (Still, you should get the car for less)
5. 5k off a GT3 is a good deal.
I was looking for prices on TT as of september, and I am no expert on prices of TT with X50, becaus eI never looked for them.
I hope this helps.

I do agree with all of the above, go for a Turbo but pick the one with, for your needs, the right options.

probably going to get a lot of "get the turbo" responses on the turbo board so you might want to ask also on the GT3 board where you'll likely get a lot of "get the GT3" responses. you can then get the rationale from both sides which should help.

Always buy the latest car you can afford. This sounds like a good choice for you and definately the turbo over the GT3. Turbo's are so easy to modify!
Yikes!

This is not a bad decision to be making in life, so I wish you luck. I know that all of these folks are big on the Turbo. While I also have one, I've got to admit that there is something to be said about the predictability of a torque curve in a normally aspirated or supercharged engine. But, the Turbo definitely looks better than the GT3 and is a lot of fun too. If you are a horsepower junkie, then I'd recommend that you go pick up one of the non-x50 turbo cars. Simply because you'll be back on this forum asking where/who can help you squeeze another 300 horses out of your car. That bug takes about 3 months...... Lastly, depreciation sucks (Can I say "sucks" on this forum?). Good luck.
