Only 9kg, lift prevention, down force gimmicks... I just know that when my hydraulic spoiler motor broke I drove with spoiler in down position on the German Autobahn few years back. As it was broken it was an ideal time to test if the spoiler does anything at all. The answer is it does. Car was notably more twitchy at the rear at speeds between 270km/h and 327km/h (my top speed) speedo indicated. Absolutely no doubt. Up to those speeds I felt zero difference.

While 8lbs of downforce at 75mph isn't much you are ignoring the added pressure over the engine compartment lid and the benefit to engine compartment cooling.

These rear engined cars need all the help they can get to get air to flow through the engine compartment. Disabling the spoiler for aesthetic reasons seems like an ill-advised choice of form over function.

I agree Macster, they didn't put the deploy able spoiler on as a non functional gimmick. Porsche just doesn't operate on that philosophy. At low speed with the spoiler down, I read there is more airflow as well.

Rusty Heap is infamous around these parts
Yes the wing is functional, to what extent? people are splitting fine hairs about 9 pounds or 90 pounds.

my question on my auto-deploy wing, is the time of average speed above 75 before it deploys, I'm sure it's not instantaneous, and also how long it takes before the speed drops below 75 till it retracts.

time wise it has be pretty slow of averaging speeds, otherwise if you bounced between 70 and 80 mph, the wing would be up down up down up down up down.

so what is the time averaged dampening? any know?

you might want to go to the Carrera forum based on your avatar. For the turbo, there is no up down up down. It is up at 100 km and down at 50. I believe the cycle time to be a few seconds. In fact when sent up, the ECU throws a fault if the limit switch on the right side does not pass current within about 11 seconds, far longer than normal wing deployment time. djcooper@rennkit.com

Most of us at the TEXAS mile in 996TT (I went 190 mph +) ran with spoiler in down position and had no problems. Now I do know for a fact the removing it completely is not advised and I know someone who did a high speed run in a 996 GT2 with "only" the factory rear wing removed which resulted in a terrifying spin over 200 mph.
