True Cost of Ownership

I was looking at edmunds.com's "True Cost to Own" calculator the other day and thought I should calculate the true cost to own my 996....as scary as that may be. They came out at about $17k per year including gas usage. I left gas off my calculation and this is what I came out with for 3 years since purchase:

Total Cash Paid to date: $89,423
This includes downpayment, loan payments, taxes, insurance, and maintenance for all 3 years.

Total cash value today: $78,000 (rough highside estimate and probably pretty high, but good enough for this)

Outstanding debt: $52,000

Cash recovered at sale = $78000-$52000= $26000

So total actual cost = $89423-$26000=$63493

this equals $21k per year and
$3 per mile driven

$21k per year sounded like a lot. But I think the $3 per mile has been worth every single penny.

and of course, the joy of owning such a fun car is in the end priceless...

I was doing the same calculation yesterday. The car I'm looking at stickered for 140K and was driven 10,000 miles.

The owner lost 60K not including taxes, registration, interest etc... in 3 years on depreciation alone. That come out to over $6 per mile.

That's why this is a hobby, not an investment.

never put a price on what you enjoy in life .... we only have what we remember and how we remember it

I enjoy this car too much to think about that.

Sounds like a lot though.

Thats nothing...the older gentleman I purchased my STi from paid $100 per mile for the time it sat in his garage, 04 w/ 1k miles at time of purchase

...in anycase, for something you know you appreciate, there is no dollar value that can be applied IMO
