Anyone know why 996 Turbo tail lights form stress cracks?

there is. just pull the *proper* fuse. the number of which escapes me just now. but that wont do anything to relieve the undue amount of stress it places on the system as it isn't designed to stay up but rather go up/down, with frequency, as you know. if you leave it "up" it places too much pressure on the seals and system in general...
alternately davecarerra4S here and at www.rennkit.com who is currently "miffed" at me has fabricated a full time "electric" solution seen here: http://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo...iler-rams.html
that eliminates altogether the "hydraulics" so you can than have it deploy up/down as it should or leave it "up" all the time if you desire, as it is still "switch" operated. i think the site IS rennkit.com

thx for that. i knew the fuse also activated something else, but couldn't remember just what. i can see how being able to get into the engine comp might be of some regular importance lol. i wonder if the emergency release for the rear is as easy to access as the front?
i have my front catch release wire tucked under my passenger side headlamp for easy access. as often as the key fobs fail, i have learned the hard way to re-route that catch wire and having done so, has served me well more than a few times already!

Thank you guys for all the info, I really appreciate it. I would've had no idea that I was doing any harm by leaving my wing up. I will definitely be buying a new wing blade that I like so that even when it's down I still love the way it looks. What's everyone's thoughts on Rotec carbon fiber wing blades? Is the quality good?
Also, I looked through almost every thread on here that has pictures of the LED taillights and I have to say I'm starting to lean that way now. Some of the side by side comparison photos got me swaying toward going for it. 02996ttx50 I saw that you've had some LED's fail in both original lights you installed. What does DRC say about them failing? Do they give you the warranty for a year from the day you got the replacements or are you screwed if the new ones last less than a year as well?

the rear emergency catch wire is to open the engine compartment in the event the battery is dead. i have never had to do that. since to get at the battery it's the frunk i need to open, not the engine comp. if you look at latch in the engine comp, you'll see it also has a metal wire connected, which presumably serves the same function as the one on the front frunk. again, i've never needed to mess with that one.

no, that's the one i re-routed and its *ordinarliy* behind the passenger side wheelwell/fender liner/bumper etc. but you can ( and i did ) re-route it so that it now sits in the gap, exposed btw the headlamp enclosure, and the body panel of the front bumper. it has an "eyelet" end so you can grab it easily with a needle nose plier.

You guys jinxed me. Started pulling my motor, and took the tail lights out. Only to grab them to pull the harness plug the wrong way and... WTF is that brittle plastic cracking under my finger.
So in my irritation, sit down to some 6speed to relax, and this thread is floating right at the top.
Guess I learned real quick how delicate these things are. I only cracked it just barely, that a little dab of glue will save it. But still, with a little more age, if you look at the eyelets wrong, they will disintegrate.
