Thank you! You had a turbo e46?? I would think that would be similar power wise to the 996.
What issue did you get? I followed the manual which said to remove the console first as the light bulb holder can only be removed from the top of the console. Did you pull the bulb down from the housing?
I tried two types of LED. W5w from eBay with no error code and Philips LED.
eBay led worked but has a slight flickering which would be annoying for the long run. Philips would go on for a second and shut off.
I'm going to try to get a different LeD and see if it works better.

Cars that have been driven few times a year can have issues. Look over the car really well.
All 996 TT's except the Tips can potentially develop the 2nd gear pop-out. I researched this heavily during the 10 or so months I searched for the perfect, to me 996 TT.
It's generally caused by speed shifting, or shifting too quickly for the way the syncros and shift dogs are designed. If you are trans savy and know how transmissions shift and can picture mechanically what goes on inside when you clutch in, move the lever, clutch out, you can sense and feel, and time your movements according and never ever have a problem. If you like to play boy racer and bang gears indiscriminately you will certainly damage your trans and the first symptom is the dreaded pop into neutral most noticed when the car is under load decelerating in second gear.
No pop out is a great sign that the trans has not been abused.

I know some people that leave there car stock and dont race it and still have the second gear pop out.
One owned it brand new. 2001 and 2002 have the most issues.
To test this go on a decline in second gear around 4500rpm and let off the gas but leave it in the gear.

What I think ~ you never know what you getting yourself into, the car may check fine, than you gonna start - fixing everything down the list, clutch, boost leaks, coolant leaks , fuel pump, etc.
I think the best way is to buy one from private party. (stay away from small dealers)

The '6 Turbo trans requires relatively slow deliberate shifts up and down to not constitute abuse as far as I'm concerned. The '6 C2 and C4 can be shifted much quicker with no ill percussion down the line. The same shifting as one was used to in a same year C2 or C4 would most likely result in 2nd gear neutral pop on decel sooner or later. It's a TT thing. I've rebuilt, improved shifting, blue printed trans' for decades and you can feel when shifting any trans, when it's ready mechanically to select the next gear. It's a slow process with the TT. That's why so many people have the pop out. They try to shift it quick as possible like on a Japanese import.
it is true what is said re 2nd gear popout and it's tendency to be limited to MY 01-02. for later iterations of the g50 the gear stack placement was altered to create different tolerances from the first two years. my 03 is flawless, while my 02 was not and needed repair.
I agree, I shift mine this way as well. When i first got her i wanted to do an ssk right away. But after driving her some, im used to the shifting already and the stock longer throw seems timed just right.
Mine is also an 03 and zero issues.
Btw, congrats to you OP
