996 Turbo / GT2 Turbo discussion on previous model 2000-2005 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo and 911 GT2.

If you didn't have a 996TT right now, what car would fill its role and place?

I thought about building another LSX RX-7 but people want way too much for even a roller these days. If I ever get another FD I will probably do a full restore on it and keep it stock plus reliability mods.

If it wasnt the 996, I would have probably just saved up longer and got a GTR. I slaved over a decision for two years and there was just nothing in the price range that I would have rather had. If I needed to drop my price then I probably would have picked up an E46 M3.

I'd like an LSx FD and am on the lookout, friend has a nice LS7 swapped car I've got my eye on. Swapping a Miata is becoming appealing and it's not harder.

Exige? Hells yes!
Focus RS? Maybe, I may get one as a daily.
CTS-V for a daily is also possible. I'm going to replace my TDI soon!
TT-RS Maybe? AWD Quattro and stick shift but only made for like 2 years
AMG SLK Merc convertible? I'm told these are hell to maintain
997 TT?

Honestly this is a tough one and one I've been debating as I ponder a new daily lol. I'd love a GTR but in my price range the transmission word terrify me!

Not a Mustang Cobra, drove a friend's and it's too much weight with too much torque. Tried to come around on me driving like a normal human. Like a hippo in a tutu it was

my 996tt replacedback in 2011 a 335i @515whp, so guess 335i with tons of upgrades, other options, even a bit more expensive, might be

- m4/m3 f30
- first gen GTR 08/09 CBA
- If can not buy the 996tt again, would do even 997 carrera S or TT(with infinite mileage) or some sort of cayman/boxster maybe with 911 engine swap

Cant see other cars to get near 996tt overall performance even by far and be priced in the same ballpark, US cars not the cheapest here so cant include any

11.7@120 is great for FBO, E60 helps a lot for sure

Turbo Dynamics stage1 turbos - at that time they were big LOL, now can do RB turbos, Pure turbos or even single turbo conversion for 600+ whp

-Jb4 as tuning platform
-Meth kit with 2 nozzles (needed custom or stett charge pipe)
-full exhaust cat less, 3" downpipes - actually forgot somehow to remove the 2nd cats when dynoed and car did 515whp with second cats on
- AMS intercooler
- Engine code N54 with 2 turbos, not N55 with twinscroll turbo ..

Basically guess that was it if not forgot anything, I did also a Quaife LSD and some suspension tricks at that time, still running strong with the new owner

Ran 19.5ps tappering to 17psi on those turbos with 94octane and 80%meth, other 335s here with RB turbos passed 600whp at 25psi, you will need new intakes too to pass 21-22psi

For one 600whp 335i, needed 1.2bar on my car with gt30s and RWD, 3280lbs car to be just slightly faster

Very interesting answers. In no specific order I'd say:

- F3x M3
- Lotus Exige
- GT-R
- C7 Z51
- E63 AMG
- MK4 Supra
- Jag. F-Type?

Looking at all the Lotus responses, this looks fun:

RE: FD RX7.. yeah the price is just nuts for them now. I wish I would have grabbed a roller several years ago when I had the chance and already had an engine to go in it. Also had the opportunity at a running FD in a distressed sale for $8000 about 2 years ago, but I passed it up. Foolish on my part. I am sure I will build one at some point. It has been a goal for many many years.

I've also been interested in a Focus RS as a daily... Could never replace with that, though. Word is they will be hard to come by and have a "market adjustment" price. Probably wait a year or 2 for that would be best... Good choice with V8 RX7 and CTS-V. Coworker has a beastly V.

Only one car I know of that could match the comfort/daily abilities of the car, cruise on the highway, match it's outright pace and HP, and then turn into a monster in the corners... GTR.

Had both at the same time and they had very similar characters... the 996TT just was a more agile, tactile, and involving experience (albiet i've redone the entire suspension vs. a stock GTR) but I think they both did the same job pretty well.

I bought mine originally back in 2003 for 14k. It was a stock 1995 with 80k on it. I went through almost every possible setup with it (upgraded twins, TO4R single, and finally LSX). I jumped on the LS swap when it just started hitting mainstream in about 07 or 08 and had a blast building the car. Half the fun was figuring everything out because it was nowhere near plug and play at that point. It was the best mod I ever did on the car because even a stock LS1 felt amazing in a 2900lb car. It was so predictable and easy to rotate in autox and just planted itself on the track. I sold it when I moved into NYC rather than see it destroyed on the crappy streets or just sit in a garage. When I moved out I thought about doing one again but it would have cost as much as the 996 to do it myself and the way I wanted. Im currently on the lookout for a clean title roller in rough shape that I can just rebuild myself over time.

I'm actually building my 335xi right now. I have the Hexon RR700s and going to do meth with e30 blend. I honestly love the N54 platform. It's my daily.
