AWD System Sensors?

Hey everyone,

I am about to embark on my 996 TT experience. I have a quick question about the AWD system though.

I know the 964s suffered from an overly complicated system that has a ton of sensors that are prone to failure and hard to find/replace and are extremely expensive.

I know very little about the 993 system, other than it was greatly simplified and improved from the previous 964 gen. How is the awd system in the 996? Are there a lot of sensors? Are they prone to failure? Are they expensive to get and install/replace?

Thank you

The 996 AWD system is similar in operation to the 993. No more sensors than a RWD car.

It is simple enough that you can unbolt the driveshaft and drive the car in RWD mode and the car has no idea that it is no longer AWD.

Electronically speaking, not much to it. I don't think there are any sensors unique to the AWD system, but don't quote me on that. It uses a viscous coupling to transfer power to front and the car takes inputs from wheel speed sensors/ABS sensors.

Overall uncomplicated, picky about tire sizing, and generally not very good IMO compared to say Subaru or the later 997 that had an electronically switched diff.
