Yes the 996.2(all years of 996tt/GT2/GT3(N.A.), and Carrera years 2002+) HID headlights are Bi-Xenon and utilize a shuttered projector, the halogen reflector unit is the 'flasher' and is also used in addition to the highbeam xenon projection. 996.1 'Litronic' lights are single Xenon units where the projector only handles low-beam duty
So what you are saying is that;

1. Our lamps have D2S bulb which handles low beam and high beam

2. In addition we have a halogen bulb which is a flasher and doubles up as a high beam in addition to the high beam part of a D2S bulb

Did I get this correctly?

An what on earth is a shuttered projector?

1. Yessir, we run a D2S bulb, it stay constantly lit/constant when low or highbeam is switched on,

2. Exactly, as the projector shutter is ever 'too slow' and isn't as noticeable as a flasher when the headlights are on, the separate lower halogen reflector is faster and more visible/noticeable difference...additionally it is far easier on the lighting system to light up a 'dead' halogen bulb vs firing up the ballast for the Xenon bulb...it is also run in addition to the highbeam of the projector, extra bonus lighting,

~3. The projector has a shutter inside of it, it provides a low beam when applied...highbeam is simply the projector being unrestricted/unshuttered

The shutter on my Subaru is pretty obvious when it moves, that car had single bulbs with dual elements and now has Mishimoto projectors in new stock housings vs the crap "replacement" HID garbage it came with - flashlights taped to the hood would've done better! I've flashed my 911 lights on my garage door before and only ever noticed the ugly halogen come on, I'd LOVE to upgrade those to HID or LED. I actually wouldn't mind a little purple sparkle to the 911 main beam like some cars have but I won't sacrifice the ability to see. Until now I'd never even considered the bulbs might have worn over the years. I've not yet looked close but how exactly are the swapped out? Once the housing is out I figured it would be easy but it sounds like maybe it's not?

might be worth disconnecting your halogens and checking to make sure your HID/projector is working properly...cars with DRL, if the relay is faulty the HID can kick off when highbeam is selected...

If anyone was on the fence, The Retrofit Source has a Black Friday discount, knocks a decent chunk off those Nightbreakers that were recommended in this thread.

I'm not affiliated in any way, just a happy repeat customer of theirs.

On a side note, thanks for posting these links. With the collapse of the GBP, this is actually the cheapest I have found these bulbs for. This company also offers free international shipping and a 12 mo warranty on the bulbs. The Retrofit Source charges $175 for the night breakers.

With regards to which bulb, I would go with the night breakers. You could drive yourself mad looking for just that little bit more. The NBs will be much better than stock and probably about the best there is.

There is no "high beam part" of a D2S bulb. The beam shifts to high mechanically hence the name bi-xenon. The H11 bulb acts as a supplement to the high beam shifting of the D2S.
