Arrow Tech question -- valve noise

Hello all,

As a new porsche owner, I have yet another question. When my car is hot, I hear what sounds like the valve tappets clacking. This sound is absent on cold startup but once warm, the noise persists. I was told by my salesman that this was normal for the turbo engine. He also asked the mechanic who performed the certification on the car. Same answer, some valve noise at IDLE is ok and to be expected. When driving I don't notice it: could be secondary to not being able to hear it vs. it goes away. Anyway, I wasn't sure so I thought I'd ask.

TIA

Geoff

Im not sure what noise you are referring to but every TT i have seen/driven too far has some sort of funky (not normal) noise coming out of it...They are all slightly different too!!

I don't think it is the valves that you hear during idle. TT engines are famous for their timing chain rattle. They all do it.

So that's what I'm hearing! My car sounded like the combination of a sweet Porsche and an old Benz diesel.

As Bob mentioned, if it's a rattling sound at idle, that's pretty normal. Raise the rpm's to 1000-1100 (even when warm) and the noise should disappear. Just about all '01/'02 Turbos make the noise, some more prominently than others.

The flywheel chatters a bit at idle also on all these cars.

So does mine

Mine normally rattles when warm at idle, it immediately goes away at engine speeds > 1,100-1,200 rpm. Another data point.
