996 Turbo X50/S - Modern Classic?

Hi all,
Wanted to get your take on these cars as modern classics. They're a personal favorite of mine (these cars came out when I first got my driver's license) and I've seen some data over the past year to suggest that they're not going up in value.

An interesting read for you here.

You'll find some bias and wishful thinking here among owners, but in all honesty, I do believe that one day it will be a "classic". When, the jury is still out...but we are starting to see the cleaner, higher optioned cars, with unique colors bring a good premium over where they were 3 years ago.

Much like the 964 was seen as the 'red-headed stepchild' for over a decade, I think the design quirks of the 996 (headlights) paired with its rawness (compared to a 991) will make it something to watch over the next 10 years.

The fact that most people overlooked or underestimated these cars, there will be fewer examples that meet the criteria of clean history, lower miles, rarer and tasteful colors, and high options

They throw the yolk shaped head lights description around without even realizing these aren't the same as the mk1.

Given the production numbers, I highly doubt the 996 or 997 turbos will ever be worth what a 964 or 993 turbo is worth.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO ANNOYING!!! I read like every article and watched like all video reviews on the 996 turbo and any of the writers the refer to them as the egg yolk headlight immediately lose all credibility. Completely different looking headlights!

I know we are biased but I truly think they are GORGEOUS headlights! Anybody that looks at a mint looking set will agree!

+1 I cant stand the oval headlights. The 996 in general is my favorite of all of the 911 line. It is the last of the special 911's that were trend setters in performance and ahead of the competition. It's also the last of the smaller wheelbase nimble type 911's. The 997 went bulky and it's been getting worse ever since. Think about the reputation of the 996 TT, GT3 and GT2. These cars were a FORCE to be reckoned with. It's been slowly downhill into obscurity in regards to the respect for the performance vs the competitors ever since.

Due to the elitism of the semi shared headlight design with the boxster, it won't get the respect it deserves. Even though they are the best looking headlights Porsche has made outside of the Carrera GT/918 and newer Caymans which IMO is the direction the 911 should have taken.

have go agree with you guys, I love the 996TT headlamps! It probably has to do with the era that I grew up in, but the 996TT was THE ultimate sports car for me at the time; that nostalgia hasn't and probably won't go away.

When I first got mine, I thought it was the "ugliest" 911 ever because of the "unconventional" headlamp. But when I changed the way how I looked at it, I thought it was an absolutely beautiful car. To me it is more like a mix of 959/gt1 than a 911. Every time I drive it, I feel like I was having s*x with a super model who has no makeup on her face. I just love it!!!

This argument is never gonna stop. However, as soon as I start the engine and driving it, those arguments become irrelevant.

My 89 M3 would have been smart to keep.
I'd trade it for a 996t in a heartbeat though

I hate eggs and have never once looked at my car and thought the headlights resembled eggs in any fashion at all. They look like something I need to flash to get the slowpokes out of my way.

996 Turbo brought the 911 Turbo into the 21st century and further cemented the Turbo platform as one of the most cutting edge and coveted fast, high performance street cars.

It was blessed with a race derived engine that continued to be used in Porsche Motorsport cars up until just this year (see article below).

In the grand scheme of things it looks like the golden age of internal combustion engines may be winding down. The Mezger motor will always be one of the biggest achievements that came from the brand.

Only other way to get your hands on a Mezger car other than 996TT (and 997.1TT) is with GT and motorsport cars.

Many people with misconceptions about these cars have never actually driven one!! I think we are all going to be a bit biased here of course but I think after actually driving a nice, well sorted 996TT any doubts are thrown to the wind. I think we can all attest to the fact that these are amazing cars.
