I've read 4 different ways now. What is the correct way? Is it really needed? If you had to do it, why?

During that 60 seconds if you walk to the back of the car after a set amount of time you will start hearing the throttle blade tick/make noises for a few seconds. That's how you know for sure it has done it's relearn.

Not based on my info.

With my Turbo or my Boxster. I can hear some faint mechanical noises when I do this with door closed.

From the factory manual:

Problem

• After disconnection of the power supply, the idle speed might change or fluctuate briefly until the idle speed positioner (M 5.2) or the throttle adjusting unit (ME 7.2) is readapted.

• The mixture adaptation is also lost.

Remedy

After the battery is connected. With the DME ME 7.2, it is necessary to carry out a learning and adaptation routine as described below:

Switch the ignition on for 1 minute without starting the engine. Do not actuate accelerator pedal.

Switch off ignition for at least 10 seconds.

This completes the adaptation of the throttle adjusting unit.

The techs told me this needs to be done periodically. It gets done if for some reason when the car is in for service power has to be removed.

The times I have replaced a battery in one of my cars I do it afterwards.

I do it when it appears the engine is being a bit unruly at low RPMs in 1st gear. This doesn't happen that often but when it does I do the E-Gas calibration.

It might be my imagination but the engine becomes better behaved afterwards.

Since I have my cars serviced -- at least in for oil/filter servicing every 5K miles I use this as an opportunity to within a day or two to do the E-Gas calibration.

i have to think joetwint was pulling your leg.

this is also suggested anytime the maf is disconnected.

the tb reset can easily be heard once it resets. sounds just like a butterfly valve opening/shutting.

Do you have to disconnect the battery for this to take place or can you perform the procedure any time?

tom153 is infamous around these parts
Engine temp needs to be within a certain range (don't remember what it is). If you're trying to do it while it too cold or hot then maybe that's why it isn't initiating? Try it after your water temp is at 170* or just below.
