Shootout updates as they happen live from the source!
As far as boost goes look at it like this. If I for example sent my ecu to upsolute prior to the shootout and had them turn my boost up 1.5 bar. I can imagine what people would be saying. Guys like stephen and Kevin who are tech Guru's never take shorcuts and have always been against these kind of things.
John, you could but as long as everyone says how they got their numbers, that is all I want. Since I can get racing gas nearby (that's what I run in my tt and Lambo), I have no problem with that one.
Duane,
When this shootout idea was first concieved, one of the tuners called me as said..... "I would like to talk to Dave Coleman, I want to see how this article is going to be written. I want them to describe what our kit consists of and what everyone is getting for their money. I do not want this to be a knock down drag out competition against your car." My response was, "give Dave a call, I'm ready to do it any way you want." Funny thing, it looks like that tuner changed his idea of how he invisioned the shootout.
Like I said earlier, what I thought was to transpire and what has transpired is two different things. My gut feeling is all anyone learned yesterday was raise your boost. It kind of reminds me of a gal with a outrageous figure .... that is if you like padded bras.
I guess with all the secrecy that took hold prior to the shootout. things like this were to be expected.

CC...I generally agree with you. I was just thinking that with a spec gas it would keep everyone honest and tend to keep the setups more relevant to what people could expect to buy and run on their own cars
John: Specifically with the gas thing, it is difficult because the car needs to be retuned for each type of gas. If I paid to have my car tuned to 93 octane with 10% ethanol and 100 octane race gas (exactly what I intend to do), it would not be fair to then force my car to run on 91 octane. See the problem? I can give slack on the gas choice but cranking the boost is like CJV said, "cheap".
CC...I see your point and agree with what you are saying. Just was thinking that the spec gas thing would be a way of keeping the boost levels down and enforce a level playing field. I would personally learn more about each tuner's capabilities that way.
Thats right. Cranking up the boost to expect a higher result IMHO isn't about fair or unfair vs. right or wrong. To each his own, IE: NOS. However, I think that was a mistake, because unless the car was re TUNED on a dyno adjusting air / fuel and spark and other variables to accomodate the larger boost levels, he might have bit himself and might have lost power (don't forget ecu learning time. Fred's torque was low for a stage IV GT. Probably from running 1.4 to 1.5 bar. I was running 558 Torque with just stage IV in the ex AWD beast.
Atleast we have some 996TT data and people actually participated in the event. Participation in anything sport or event is good or better than pointing fingers.
Hopefully ther will be lots of pictures to follow and stories to tell. I was going to fly out there BUT couldnt get on a plane as everything was oversold due to the holiday weekend.
More good news is that more than likely there will be FUTURE editions of these "SHOOTOUTS". No matter what is informative entertainment.
have a great day

Shank,
In my opinion, it has nothing to do with fair or unfair, NOS or No NOS. It has to do with doing it right. Selling something to the general public that you have tried and tested not to mention making sure it is a somewhat reliable package. I have not seen anyone offering 1.4 and 1.5 bar boost in their advertised packages.
Come to think of it, as I reflect back, I should have suspected something. Being able to disable the 1.3 bar boost restriction on the 996tt and GT2 is a relative new discovery. If everyone remembers back a few months ago I approached GIAC through two of their distributors for the purpose of removing the limitation in my ECU. The response I recieved from both of them was,"Yes, GIAC would be happy to do this to your car, but not until after the shootout."
Yes, it is all now perfectly clear. It seems now my little tuner friend who didn't want to compete was sand bagging big time.
One of the reasons I passed on this shootout was the response I received from GIAC and the fact the GIAC dyno was being used. From my point of view there was simply a hugh conflict of interest.
Sorry, but just as with the larger injectors, we have figured out the way around the boost restriction. It appears from this shootout they still have to figure out torque, holding the system together under pressure and clutches that will survive.

I just had a terrible thought. What if we have an earthquake and all of our tuners get swallowed up? Aghhhhh!
