has anyone converted an auto to a 6-sp?

just wondering since it is so popular on other makes/models if anyone on here has done it. Im assuming its cost prohibitive since a 6-sp awd tranny is so expensive and hard to come by, but Id love to hear any info on the subject. thanks!

Actually, 6 speeds are not that expensive. And yes, there was a thread a while back by someone who'd done the conversion. Not too terrible, surprisingly.

No time now - I'll see if I can find the thread later.

See this quote below...(I bold'd what I think are the important sentences )

I'm one of those guys that hate when people tell me that, but there are reasons behind this. The amount of labor to be completed far exceeds reason. For starters, the entire interior has to come out right down to the metal including the dashboard. Also, the entire drive train has to be removed from the car, front to rear. Then the wiring madness can begin, lol

There are a ridiculous amount of differences which I can list off if someone needed, but the list is a mile long.

Depending on how much less you can get a Tip car for, it actually isn't that bad - especially after the Tip transmission has been sold. And who said anything about building the trans? With a stock motor it's simply not a necessity.

Gophaster found the thread I was thinking of. The quote by nitrorocket is actually one of the only really negative posts in the thread. Both MariusL and oren997.1 turbo did not consider the conversion too terrible. But both apparently left the Tip wiring harness in place while nitrorocket changed it out. I've spoken to a guy here in Germany since as well - not that big an issue, apparently. Of course all of this requires finding a Tip for much less than a manual car and finding all the parts for the conversion inexpensively too.

not much of a thread about how to do it, basically hes just saying that the entire wire harness needs to be removed...

I can tell you I have done the swap on BMWs and have not had to change the wire harness, but there is rewiring that needs to be done. Too bad nobody goes into detail about it.

I guess since these cars are still in the $30k range, not too many hackers have attempted this job. Maybe I will if I find a tip car cheap enough.

anyone parting out a manual turbo? LOL. I wonder if a 2wd tranny would fit. Ebay is loaded with tip trannys, so Im assuming they are pretty much worthless and will do nothing towards reimbursing the project.
